Boys Varsity Lacrosse Finishes Regular Season

As they head into the playoffs, the Garden City boys varsity lacrosse team finishes a very successful regular season with a 12-4 overall record and an 8-2 Conference B-1 record. Impressive non league wins came over Manhasset at the Woodstick Classic, Syosset, who is the defending Class A champion, Smithtown West and nationally ranked Georgetown Prep of Maryland. Finishing 3rd in their conference the Trojans have drawn a first round playoff bye and will play in the Quarterfinals at Hofstra on Wednesday, May 28th. Most recently the Trojans are coming off wins over Hewlett and Mepham and a loss to the Lynbrook Owls.
During the first half of the Lynbrook game on May 14th the Trojans seemed unstoppable, scoring four goals to Lynbrook's one. The Owls entered the second half with a renewed energy and scored four goals in the third quarter and one more in the fourth. GC only added one additional goal in the fourth quarter and eventually lost 6-5. Scoring for Garden City were: Francis McDonough (2); Kevin Rose (1), Vin Chiodo (1 goal, 1 assist), and Will Fuller (1). Dan Savage also had two assists. Brian McCullough made 10 saves.

The victory over Hewlett on May 17th came during the Men's Association's Annual Sports Fair. Various teams from the Middle School and High School play before the featured varsity baseball and varsity lacrosse games. This year the baseball team faced Manhasset in a one game playoff that the Trojans won 13-8. At the same time, the lacrosse team was on the turf battling Hewlett. Kevin Rose led the scoring for GC with three goals on the way to the 10-4 win. Other scoring for the Trojans included: Dan Savage ( 2), Jon Muscarella (1), Francis McDonough (1), Will Fuller (1), Vin Chiodo (1), and Hayden Fries (1). Brian McCullough made nine saves in three quarters. Brendan Engelke was in goal for the 4th quarter and made one save.

During halftime, the Garden City Lacrosse Alumni Association honored three men who have made contributions to the program through their time and efforts. Honored were: Ed Phillips, John Dell'Olio and Bill Fuller. Fuller graduated with the class of '46 and went on to become a three time All American at Syracuse University and was elected to the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He is the grandfather of Will Fuller, a junior who currently starts for the Trojans. Ed Best, the captain of the 1941 team at GC was also on hand to watch the game.
In a torrential rain on May 20th, GC traveled to Mepham for the last regular game of the season. Despite a field that seemed to be turning into a swamp with each passing minute, the Trojans put together a 10-0 shutout. Jon Muscarella scored a game-high three goals with one assist and Brian McCullough made 10 saves in goal. Brendan Carroll, recently back from an injury that kept him out for most of the season, scored two goals. Adding to the scoring were: Ryan Lynch (1), Dan Losardo (1), Will Fuller (1), Mark Fischer (1), and John Betts (1).
