Daredevils (GU13) Come Back with Heart and Spirit
"Me? Tired? Never!" ...says Liesl Jaye.
After landing in the top of Division 2, many of the Daredevils were ready to face the intense challenge of Division 1...but the season has been tough. This past Sunday something clicked - and the spirit, camaraderie and determination were back. Their competition was Deer Park who GC suffered a 5-0 loss to earlier in the season, and the Daredevils were facing a full bench with no subs. Odds were against them.
But... eleven hearts and minds came together that morning, with grit and a sense of purpose that defines "team." The thing is...they knew they were the underdog and decided they were going to rally, since several girls made sacrifices to be at the game (including missing a brother's graduation!)
Kelsey Tierney was the anchor of the defense in goal with rapid saves against a relentless offense; and Carly Knowles was her bookend - charging up the offense, with multiple breakaways and an incredible goal. They were connected by Lauren Coleman who created the opportunity for Knowles' shot, and who played hard (as always) on both defense and offense. Niki Berkery had an awesome game controlling the middle of the defensive end, while Taylor Pappas consistently disrupted the opponent. At midfield, Courtney Studdert and Jenna Pasquale gave it their all in non-stop action. Liesl Jaye handled the middle of the field with her bountiful energy! Brynn Murphy displayed her versatility on both defense and offense, as did Nicole Bommarito who "dug deep" throughout the game. Jane Frumberg had a terrific showing on offense. Coaches Paul LeSeur and John Studdert had them "wired to win" - which added to the electricity that kept them going. They played 'til the end.
Kelsey Tierney and Carly Knowles share a moment, "Couldn't have done it without you."
So, the game ended a 1:1 tie, but it's not about the score. It was their spirit and perseverance that shined through. The team came off the field with nothing left to give, but smiles and "high fives" to each other ...and that's what it's all about.
