On Monday, April 28th Neil Carlin, Vice President of Merrill Lynch addressed the Garden City Retired Men's Club on the subject of "Investing in stocks and bonds during these turbulent times," Neil cautioned that investing in the stock/bond market is not for everyone. There is a huge difference in safety between money in a bank CD or Money Market account as opposed to a stock/bond investment. However, with proper professional guidance the risk is somewhat lessened. He stressed the importance of diversification. We should balance the portfolio to include both national and international investments, thereby reducing part of the volatility present in today's market. In each portfolio the percentage to be allocated in the breakdown of cash to stocks to bonds to real estate and other asset investments is an issue that must be determined by the needs of each individual. Each portfolio is different. A lively question and answer period from an appreciative audience followed.
