ACS Kitchen Tour Dedicated To Two Volunteers
This year the American Cancer Society will hold its "Heart of the Home" Kitchen Tour in Garden City on Thursday, June 5th from 10am to 2pm. You can begin this enjoyable day with breakfast at the Garden City Country Club, to be served between 9 and 11am. A unique aspect of this event is the opportunity it provides to remember special people who have been vital to the cause's success. This year the tour is being dedicated to the memory of Cleo B. Caddy and Lorraine Hart.
With the help of her close friend Janith Kice, MD, Cleo Caddy helped to lift the Garden City Unit of the American Cancer Society off the ground, serving as its first president. Meeting once a month, it didn't take long for the Unit to grow and become a thriving organization of forty hard working creative ladies, volunteering endless hours to organize exciting events which raised money for cancer research. Cleo's sense of volunteerism and devotion to the Garden City Unit made such a mark on her family that her daughter, Charna Caddy DiSanto, followed in her footsteps, becoming president of the Garden City Unit in 1992.
Lorraine Hart passed on October 26, 2007 just shy of her 80th birthday. Shortly after moving to Garden City in 1977, Lorraine Hart began an association with the American Cancer Society that she continued to nurture over the next thirty years. She served as Vice President, Treasurer, Recording Secretary and finally President of the Garden City Unit. During her tenure as President, Lorraine was infamous for producing a talent show held at the Garden City Hotel, during which she sustained a broken wrist. As a two time cancer survivor, Lorraine was well aware of the challenges facing patients undergoing treatment for cancer. She volunteered to drive cancer patients to their appointments, listening to their concerns and sharing her experience with cancer treatment with them. Three years ago, in recognition of her many years of service, she was recognized as Volunteer of the Year by the Long Island chapter of the American Cancer Society.
We are privileged to honor these two special women and remember their efforts on behalf of the American Cancer Society. Please join us by sending your response to Mrs. Tina Palmer at 119 Kildare Road in Garden City, NY 11530. Tickets for the tour and breakfast cost $60, and tickets for just the tour are $40. For an additional $80, you may also purchase 6 door prize tickets and 1 grand door prize ticket. Checks may be made payable to the American Cancer Society - Garden City Unit.
