Choral Society Sings Spring Concert
On Sunday, May 18 th at 4 p.m. in Manhasset's Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, the Long Island Choral Society will continue its 79 th season with a concert featuring a performance of Carl Orff's celebrated choral cantata "Carmina Burana" and a performance by pianist Aaron Huang, winner of the Choral Society's 27 th annual Young Artists competition. The Congregation's sanctuary is located on the west side of Shelter Rock Road, 1 1/2 miles north of L.I. Expressway Exit 35 (Northern Parkway Exit 27), a half mile south of Northern Boulevard. "Carmina Burana" draws on ancient models from Greek tragedy and Italian Baroque musical theatre, as well as Bavarian peasant life. Audiences have found this popular work's harmonies easy to respond to. Orff's words and music are carried by driving rhythmic force and make the most immediate impression possible in musico-dramatic style. Soloists for this performance include soprano Arlene Travis: tenor Jonathan Cornell and baritone Jeremy Moore. Aaron Huang is 14 and has studied piano for 10 years. He lives in Little Neck and attends the Waldorf School in Garden City. He will perform the first movement of Robert Schumann's Sonata No. 2 opus 22. Founded in 1929, the Long Island Choral Society is the longest continuously performing musical group on Long Island. Now in her 29 th season as the Society's conductor, Meredith Elaine Baker is Director of Music at the Catholic Chapel of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and a member of the Liturgical Music Commission of the Archdiocese of New York. Her Cadet Choir performed for Pope Benedict, during his visit to New York. The Choral Society's 75-voice chorus is drawn from forty Long Island and New York City communities.
