Rosin Flies As Musicians Perform Together
Cellists Catherine Fischer, a junior, with seventh-graders Allison Miller, Adrie Christiansen, Erica Giarraputo, and Katarina Marschhausen.
The Garden City High School Chamber Orchestra and the 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Orchestras performed side-by-side on April 14th, when the High School musicians visited the Middle School to play with their younger counterparts. Music teacher Margaret Gullotta's inspiration for the event was a similar experience she had when, as a student at the High School of Music and Art, she performed with the New York Philharmonic. At the Garden City side-by-side, the High School Chamber Orchestra performed a movement of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto # 6 and the African-American spiritual Follow the Drinking Gourd (a euphemism for the Big Dipper and the road to freedom). The Chamber Orchestra then performed selections from the Middle School repertoire, giving the younger musicians a unique opportunity to hear their own concert pieces performed live. Finally, younger and older musicians rehearsed side-by-side, a truly a unique experience. With a few minutes left at the end of the event, the younger students had a chance to show off their musical accomplishments by performing for the Chamber Orchestra.
Cellists Catherine Fischer, a junior, and Victoria Zawisha (grade 6).
