You know its Spring when the trees start to bloom, the Daffodils give their all with their sunny yellow heads, and Clark Botanic Gardens announce their Spring Plant Sale. This year will be their 39th annual sale and it will run from Thursday, May 8th to Saturday, May 10th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on each of the three days. They will be offering unusual plants for your garden along with Wildflowers, Herbs, Shrubs, Hanging Baskets, Vegetables, and both annuals and perennials. Their Gift Shop, Tea Room, and an Art Show will all be there for your enjoyment. The sale will go on rain or shine and there is no admission fee. They will have something for everyone so go and enjoy.
The Ladies/Lunch/Bridge for the members of the Garden City Casino and their guests was held on Tuesday, April 15th and they had a wonderful turn out. Among those enjoying the afternoon as well as the Salad Plate Luncheon were: Edie Cox, Blanche Muller, Sue Hall, Ruth Brown, Marilyn Camp, Anne Comunale, and Barbara Flanagan. A good time was had by all.
It was the turn for the Cherry Valley Club on Wednesday, April 16, for the dinner/Bridge and they had twenty-two tables in play following the Buffet Dinner. A Grand Slam was made by A lyce Coleman and Gloria Mentzel in 7 Hearts. The first Small Slam of the evening was made by Pat Dolan and Marie Kelly in 6 No Trump. The two Door Prizes were won by Helen Ferro and by Marilyn Rivara. Bridge Chairman, George Rivara announced that the next Dinner/Bridge would be held on Wednesday evening, May 21st. Among those attending the April event were: Barbara and Bill Haynes, Kris and Frank Harder, Blanche Volz, Dougal Fraser, Carolyn and Rudy Kaiser, and Lillian Berryman.
Following on the heels of these two bridges, was the Ladies Luncheon/Bridge at the Garden City Country Club on Thursday, April 17th. They had twenty-two tables in play and the first Small Slam of the afternoon was made by Norma Spencer and Marilyn Rivara in 6 Hearts. Later in the day, Barbara Wilson and Caryl Donovan made a Grand Slam in 7 Spades. The monthly Door Prize was won by Margaret Heinrich. Bridge Chairlady Muriel Urban announced that the next Bridge would be held on Thursday, May 15th. Reservations are a must for this event, so make sure you get yours in.
Don't forget to get your reservations in also for the April 30th Bridge, sponsored by the Garden City Chapter of the Nassau County Homemakers Council. Tickets at $20 per person include Sandwiches, a Viennese Table of Desserts, Coffee or Tea. This event will be held at the Garden City Community Church and reservations are being taken by Rose Innes, 52 Avalon Road, Garden City, N.Y. 11530.
Bridge is not the only thing going on in town and the Garden City Library presented Suzie Alvey and Brian Pinnol a in a program: Garden City: Then and Now. Refreshments were served and there was a free Raffle. Enjoying the program were Ida and Jennie Catania, Jackie West, Lucille Tilitz among many others. It was wonderful seeing scenes from the old days in town - places that in some cases are no longer here.
Happy birthday wishes go to Nancy Pastula and to Eileen Dower, both of whom will be celebrating their special days before the end of April. May they both have a wonderful day and a great year filled with health and happiness and many more years to come.
Happy anniversary wishes go to Elizabeth and Charles Donleavy who will celebrate on the 25th of this month and also to Joyce and Robert McCarthy and Patricia and Patrick Quinn. The last two couples will both be celebrating their 53rd Wedding Anniversaries. May they all have a great day and many more years of wedded bliss to enjoy in health and happiness.
The Joy of Reading, a topic enjoyed by the members of the Garden City Branch of A.A.U.W. and chaired by Sally Richmond, will be led by Janet Fecht in a discussion of "Gilead" by Marilyn Robinson. It will be held on Wednesday, April 30th at 1 p.m. and the hostess will be Georgene Harrison with Marie Bartolotta as her co-hostess.
And, now to leave you with a thought that will bring a smile to your face, the real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting time.
