Varsity Track Dominates - Again
Molly Josephs finishes 3rd in the 1500m.
The Lady Trojans continued their Spring season with a quad meet at Calhoun a week ago Tuesday and dominated. Scoring big in every event, the girls totaled 137 points; easily outdistancing Calhoun (51), Carey (30) and Roslyn (27). The victories gave the GC girls a perfect 6-0 record two weeks into the season.
With multiple winners and many scorers, the girls are demonstrating just how good they are. They have also given their fans a glimpse into the flexibility that coach Cuzzo has with this group. In the two meets, several of the girls were able to run or jump or throw in multiple events and come up with points for the team; often times reaching personal bests!
The scorers at this meet and their places were: Laura Martens (1), Michelle Rotondo (2), Lauren 'Stick' Williams (3) in the 400 intermediate hurdles, Taryn Schmelzinger (1), Katy Daly (3), Dana Famiglietti (4) in the 100m, Maddie Adams (1), Jenna D'Angelo (2), Deanna Ceriano (3) in the 400m, Michelle Rotondo (1) and Lauren 'Stick' Williams (2) in the 100m hurdles, Emily Menges (1), Molly Josephs (3) in the 1500m, Brooke Senken (2), Aoi Nishi (3), Victoria Chimento (4) in the 800m, Emily Menges (1), Taryn Schmelzinger (2) and Katie Daly (4) in the 200m, Liz Slattery (2) in the 3000m, Abby Hepworth (1) Lauren Williams (3), Monika Mohacsi (5) in the high jump, Alex Schlapp (4) in the shot put, Emily Menges (1) and Michelle Rotondo (2) in the long jump, Alex Schlapp (1), Kate Odell (3) in the discus and Lauren 'Stick' Williams (1), Laura Martens (4), Abby Hepworth (5) in the triple jump. As a reminder, the scoring is based on a 6-4-3-2-1 point system for the first 5 finishers.
Liz Slattery looks strong in the 3000m.
While in the relays (with scoring of 6-4-2), GC took first in the 4x400m (1) with Brooke Senken, Victoria Chimento, Laura Martens and Katy Daly, and in the 4x100m (1) with Catherine Cafaro, Eleni Andromedes, Taryn Schmelzinger and Deanna Ceriano. As well as taking second in the 4x800 with Lauren Williams, Kelsey Harrington, Molly Josephs and Jenna D'Angelo.
The girls also ran in the 25th Girls Suffolk Coaches Invitational Meet last Saturday. Unfortunately the meet was cancelled midway through the day because of lightning and most of the team did not get to perform. The only events that were completed that saw GC bring home medals were the 400m hurdles - Michelle Rotondo (4th) and Lauren 'Stick' Williams (5th), the 1500m - Emily Menges (1st), Shot put - Alex Schlapp (4th), the 400m - Brooke Senken (4th) and the high jump - Michelle Rotondo (1st).
Emily Winchurch out of the 100m blocks fast.
The girls had another divisional tri-meet at GCHS this past Tuesday against Mepham and Valley Stream Central. Hopefully you were able to get out and see this talented group that make us proud every time they step on the track.
Next up are the NY Relays held at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island tonight and tomorrow. The meet is one of the area's top track and field events for both high school and college athletes. Then it's on to the Penn Relays next week - one of the nation's most prestigious events!

Emily Menges wins the 1500m at Bayshore.
