In a game of two undefeated teams the Garden City Trojans girls varsity lacrosse team traveled to Glen Head to take on the North Shore Vikings on Tuesday afternoon April 15th. Garden City had a 4-3 lead at halftime and went on to outscore North Shore 9-2 in the second half bringing the final score to 13-5.Caroline McTiernan led the Trojans scoring with five goals. More ... The Garden City Avalanche, a team of girls from Centennials Division III, recently finished the indoor season at the Roughriders training center over at the Mitchell Athletic Complex. More ... Last Saturday the Garden City U-11 Xtreme lost their second round Waldbaums Cup match against the Farmingdale Unites. The match was played on the astro-turf at Allen Park. The girls U15 Fireballs have really come out of the gate quickly this season, winning another match last Saturday against rival Albertson. The win advances the girls to the quarterfinals of the Waldbaum's Cup for the third straight year. The match against the Fury was played as expected - with a lot of intensity, a high level of skill and decided by one goal. More ... Three members of the Garden City Wings Middle School Ice Hockey team recently competed in the Middle School Division All Star Game and Skills Competition of the High School Hockey League of Nassau County held at the Iceworks Rink. Eighth grade defense, Robert Tomao and seventh grade defense, Mark Brady played for the "dark" team coached by Robert Kempner of Wantagh-Seaford. More ... One does not mind losing if you lose to the better team and you give your best effort through out. The girls never quit and hustled to the last whistle in losing to a select Northport PAL team. The girls came back from an 8-3 deficit to lose 8-6. Garden City dominated the ball the last 2 minutes but strong goal tending by Northport sealed their win. More ... Judo athletes from Masspapequa's Combat Judo Academy recently competed at the 2008 USA Judo National Championships held April 10-13 in Virginia Beach, VA. The event highlighted many prospective Olympians preparing for the 2008 Olympics Games in Beijing. More ... The Garden City Wings Varsity Ice Hockey Team recently concluded their 35th season in the High School Hockey League of Nassau County. The team had a great regular season record of 10-3-5. This gave the boys third place and a playoff spot. More ... The Lady Trojans continued their Spring season with a quad meet at Calhoun a week ago Tuesday and dominated. Scoring big in every event, the girls totaled 137 points; easily outdistancing Calhoun (51), Carey (30) and Roslyn (27). The victories gave the GC girls a perfect 6-0 record two weeks into the season. More ... Last Friday night the GC Renegades 5th grade team played a new team to the OBLL. Rockville Centre appearing for the first time in the OBLL turned out to be a tough test for the GC Renegades. To make matters worse there was a slight mist in the air and new sod covered the field. Not only were they battling the other team but the elements as well. More ... The GC Warriors defeated the Bayport Strikers 4-1 on March 12th to advance to the third round of the Waldbaum's cup. The boys continued their stellar play from previous weeks, working as a team to move the ball around the field with on point passing. More ... Mid Island Gymnastics Level 7 Team located in Hicksville, NY competed against 26 qualifying teams at the New York State Championship. The Mid Island team went on to win the First Place Team Award at the meet, which was held at New Image Gymnastics on March 29th and 30th. The win, which came in the second round of the Waldbaums Cup tournament, was the result of a true team effort in which every player made significant contributions. The 6th Grade White Sweeties defeated Oyster Bay on the road by a score of 16-5. The victory over a determined Oyster Bay club, marked the third con-secutive win by Team White. Injured player/team statistician, Lauren Mixon commented, "The game was highlighted by an unselfish style of play where 14 of the 16 goals were assisted and 13 different players earned a point". More ... The girls played their best all around game of the year. The team's ability to pass and catch led to eight different girls recording at least one point. On the defensive end the team had 4 goalie saves, 2 three second calls, and numerous successfully double teams. More ... The Garden City Renegades 2nd Grade team opened the season verse a talented Hills East squad. The boys needed no time to get warmed up on the CHILLY Sunday morning in April.The team finally got to lace up their cleats and pound out their pockets in preparation of the team's first scrimmage of 2008. Teamwork was the word of the day as Max Webster scored two goals on excellent assists from Brian Leggett and Sean Knowles. X - man Sam Lucchesi was able to rack up a pair of his own working tight angles from the crease on feeds from JP Welch and Christian Irwin. More ... Harvard freshman attacker Dean Gibbons, of Garden City, was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week after matching his career-high with four points April 5, the conference announced Monday.Gibbons registered a goal and three assists in the Crimson's 11-7 loss to Cornell in the first-ever lacrosse game played at Gillette Stadium. More ... A Garden City High School graduate is looking to help train any local soccer team or athlete over the summer. Joey Tavernese, who is now attending Siena College on a Division I soccer scholarship, would like to share his experience with other athletes and teams when he is home for summer break. More ... Ryan Alexander, a student at Union College, was named Co-Rookie of the Week for his attack position on the Men's Lacrosse team. Alexander led Union with four assists on the week as the Dutchmen went 1-1 in a pair of contests. More ... The Seaford Blue Jays traveled to Garden City for a girls varsity softball game on a beautiful Thursday afternoon, April 10th. Pitching for Seaford was Ally Ryan who gave up five hits and struck out ten on the way to a 7-1 win over the Trojans. More ... The U14 Garden City FIRE are off to a hot start this spring season. In the April 5th season opener the FIRE dominated with a 5-0 opening game win vs the Commack Revolution. Greg Bellantonio pitched the FIRE to a complete game victory behind the hitting of Darryl Tan, Sean Kiley, Niko Cerame, Nick Scibelli, Ryan Ilardi and the base running of Ryan Pfingst. More ... North Shore's Bobby Magnuson struck out six and allowed three hits in six innings to take North Shore to a 9-1 victory over Garden City Tuesday afternoon April 8th at Garden City. The Trojans bounced back three days later as Colin Ridgway pitched to a 6-3 win over Mineola. Ridgway allowed no hits while striking out six. More ... Cold, damp, misty weather on Friday, April 11th didn't stop the Garden City Trojans boys JV lacrosse team as they handed the Jericho Jayhawks a 13-0 loss. The team will take it's unbeaten record into a game against Wantagh tomorrow, Saturday April 19th for a 1pm faceoff at Garden City High School.
