2008-04-18 / Community

Winthrop-University Hospital will offer a free program, "Boning Up On Osteoporosis: Get Smarter, Get Stronger!" on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at 7:00 PM. It will be held at the Winthrop Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Boulevard, at the corner of Second Street in Mineola. The interactive program will be presented in an informative format designed to educate and illustrate the proactive approach to fighting this disease.

Jane Greensher, RN, MA, CCRC, Coordinator of the Osteoporosis Diagnostic and Research Treatment Center at Winthrop, will discuss risk factors, the importance of early detection and prevention, and treatment options. Ms. Greensher will also explain the World Health Organization's recently released assessment tool, FRAX(r), a 10-year fracture risk model and 10-year frac-ture probability. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, the absolute fracture risk methodology was designed to assure that people with the highest fracture risk get treated.

"Promoting stronger bones is a lifetime commitment," emphasizes Ms. Greensher. "The choices you make now can help reduce bone loss as you age."

Linda Radler, PT, MPA, Director of Physical Therapy at Winthrop, will discuss the benefits of exercise and proper body mechanics, and will demonstrate exercises that can help build bone density. The program will conclude with a question and answer period.

Parking and the entrance are available in the rear of the building. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Reservations are required. To reserve a seat, please call 1-888-53-WOMEN.
