Garden City resident Diana O'Neill recently addressed the Township Theatre Group of Huntington at their Volunteer Recognition Night held at the Farmingdale Knights of Columbus Hall. O'Neill, the Executive Director of the Long Island Volunteer Center, gave the group a well received talk on the challenges and rewards of volunteerism. As Executive Director of the Long Island Volunteer Center, Diana has, played a key roll in: creating and chairing the Long Island Volunteer Hall of Fame; co-sponsoring the corporate community service initiative Long Island Volunteer Enterprise; creating the welfare to work program of Our Lady of Loretto Parish Social Ministry; co-sponsoring the annual Post Office Food Drive; running the annul Prom Boutique gown giveaway project; and many other noteworthy charitable events. Diana summed up her view of volunteerism, by saying that, "Volunteerism isn't what you give or what you get. It's what you become".
After Diana's talk, long-time TTG member Ruth D'Onofrio was honored as the group's Volunteer of the Year. Ruth who joined TTG in 1954 and is affectionately known to TTG members as their Godmother, has either produced or worked on over 100 shows. A prolific producer and a do it all kind of person, Ruth can always be counted on to do whatever it takes to ensure that "the show goes on". And as was pointed out during the presentation of her award, "it was Ruth's graceful smile, calm demeanor and words of encouragement that have greatly enabled TTG in its mission to provide some of the finest theatre on Long Island for the past 50 plus years".
