Socially Speaking
With Athena
Summer seemed to be nudging spring recently and the result was that our flowering trees burst into bloom Ladies wearing light colors appeared overnight in our social landscape, and the dry-cleaners and furriers started taking in winter coats for storage. We all know that Mother Nature is teasing us and we will have cooler temperatures again, but we also know that it won't be for long and we can make it through. It will not be long before we get our Pool applications, something I am looking forward to along with the rest of you.
Adelphi University did it again. They provided a performance of an entertaining evening of political satire by a group known as The Capitol Steps. Having enjoyed their show on Off-Broadway many times, it was a pleasure to see them on home turf. The evening performance was free and the Ballroom at the University Center was packed with students, alumni, and Garden City residents all laughing away. Some of those attending were: Jean Kuster, Marilyn Flynn, Gladys Clemmensen . A good laugh does us all good, especially in these times.

The Cherry Valley Club was the setting for the Aaron Ogden Chapter of the D.A.R.'s annual Spring Philanthropic Luncheon last week and they had a full house. Betsey Gulotta was the speaker and her program on The Hempstead Plains was both informative and entertaining. Her recent book, 'Island Prairie" a story of the plains and animals of the Hempstead Plains and illustrated by Harriet Caretenute, was not only the Table Prize, but available for purchase. Among those attending were: Martha Widner, Peggy and Roger Tilletson, Marjorie Musil, Isabel Smith, Joe Keating from the Garden City American Legion Post, Georgene Harrison, and Frances Pattarini, a Garden City lady now residing in the Mid-West. Harriet Carotenuto, a Garden City artist teaching in the Studio Department of the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead, is also showing her work at the Syosset Library this month and that includes her illustrations from "Island Prairie,' her Botanicals, and a sample of all her other types of paintings. Do go to see the show and enjoy.

The Post Office is doing something new. I got an envelope where the cancelation mark was a saying. I don't know if it was from Garden City. Western Nassau facility, or Florida. The saying was a quote and it read "Let us Dare to Read, Think Speak and Write." Following that was the name John Adams and I could not read the rest. I kind of liked it and since it was on a letter written by me to a friend in Florida, who returned the envelope, I though I would share it in case any of you got the same thing.
Have a good one and I'll see you next week.
