Special Workshops For Breast Cancer Patients
Fitness professionals note that belly dancing can serve as a refreshing alternative to typical exercises to help with long-term exercise adherence. Participants will learn popular belly dance movements, including hip circles, figure 8's, crescent moons, hip twists, undulations, shimmies and more.
Renate Wallasch is a Middle Eastern belly dance performer, choreographer, teacher and owner of the Harem Belly Dance Studio in Baldwin. She is the artistic director and choreographer for six Middle Eastern dance troupes who have performed internationally. With over 30 years experience, she has performed at Lincoln Center, Nassau Coliseum and the Fine Arts Festival in Roslyn, as well as on cruise ships and television.
No dance experience necessary; just wear comfortable clothes and shoes and bring water.
GUIDED IMAGERY/ MEDITATION

This workshops offers a deep relaxing meditation and guided imagery encounter that can increase physical and emotional well-being. The power of imagination can be directed to stimulate changes in the body, create calm and focus, and enhance awareness of the 'inner world.' Research shows that this interactive approach can help to reduce symptoms and affect the overall outcome of many therapies.
Lynne Fain, MA, LCSW, psychotherapist and educator trainer, is certified in interactive guided imagery. She taught meditation at Cancer Care, Inc, and South Nassau Communities Hospital, Mental Health Counseling Center. She is a cancer survivor with private practices in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Special Free Workshops in May and June for People Who Have Had Breast Cancer
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, as part of their Complementary Wellness Series, is sponsoring free programs on acupunc-ture, belly dancing and guided im-agery/meditation this May and June. They are open only to people who have had breast cancer. All are held at Adelphi University's Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue in Garden City. The workshops are supported by a grant from The New York State Department of Health, Community Based Cancer Support Services.

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture, as an adjunct to chemo-therapy and radiation, is one of the techniques used to strengthen the im-mune system and establish balance. Par-ticipants will see a demonstration of acupuncture treatment as well as qigong, an art that combines movement and meditation to enhance the mind/ body connection and assist healing.
Liz Snow, BS, MS, is an Oriental medi-cine practitioner with a private prac-tice in East Norwich. She is nationally certified as a Diplomate in acupuncture and Chinese herbology and is also a qigong practitioner and instructor. She was a member of a task force that de-veloped Oriental medicine protocols for treating breast cancer survivors and is a breast cancer survivor herself.
