Helene C. Ehmann
On March 16th, Helene C. Ehmann died peacefully, in the comfort of her home, at age 95. Helene has been preceded in death by her parents, Marguerite (Roy) and Eugene Bogstahl, a brother, Marcel, and by her husband of 45 years, Howard, who died in 1984. She is survived by her two children, Nancy C. Aronzon of West Park, NY, and W. Chris Ehmann, MD of Harrisburg, PA, and four grandchildren: Denise B. Aronzon, MD, of Charlottesville, VA, Nicole L. Aronzon of New York, NY, Stephanie M. Aronzon of New York, NY and W. Chris Ehmann of Harrisburg, PA.
Helene Cecile (Helen) was born precipitously on December 13, 1912, long before the doctor could arrive at the Fort Washington apartment. Raised in Cliffside Park, NJ, Helen began her career in the secretarial pool at Shell Oil. When Helen left to raise her family after more than a decade at Shell, it was as secretary to the President. In 1950, Helen and Howard moved to Garden City to raise their children and remained Garden City residents for the rest of their lives.
Helen was deeply involved in community activities. For over forty years, she was a singer and a member on the Board of Directors of the Long Island Choral Society. She was a member, and eventually treasurer, of the Community Club of Garden City, and a volunteer at Winthrop University Hospital where she worked over 7500 hours over many years, mostly in the gift shop. She also served as chairman of the Winthrop Volunteers Scholarship committee. Helen served her church, Our Savior Lutheran Church in Mineola, NY for many years, in a variety of capacities, including Board President.
Although her faculties faded, Helen still found pleasure in family gatherings, bustling crowds, shopping, movies and always ice cream. She enjoyed the March 9th Spring Long Island Choral Society concert, one week before her death.
Funeral services were held March 19th at Fairchilds and Sons, and burial was at George Washington Memorial Park Paramus, NJ, on the following day. Contributions to the Long Island Choral Society, or Our Savior Lutheran Church, Mineola, NY, would be appreciated in memory of Helen.
