Everyone's Irish At St. Paddy's Day Carnival
      Last Friday saw the return of the wildly popular St. Patrick's Day carnival at St. Joseph School. The students and teachers were encouraged to donate $1 to wear their Jeans and Greens and were treated to a Irish wonderland in the gym.

Chamber Names Stuart Lubow Business Person Of The Year
      The Garden City Chamber of Commerce proudly announces that Stuart H. Valentines For Vets At Hemlock
     Hempstead Town Councilman Edward Ambrosino (left, back row) gathers with students at Hemlock Elementary School in Garden City to thank them for their participation in the Valentines for Vets program, which the Town instituted in 2001. Through this program students create valentines to send to veterans in local VA hospitals. The councilman collects the valentines and brings them to a veteran's organization, which then delivers them to the hospitalized veterans. Many of these men and women don't have families and it means so much to them to know that the young children appreciate them for the sacrifices they have made for our nation. Public Forum On Immigration
      Adelphi University will convene leading experts at a public forum to discuss "Immigration on Long Island: Our Challenge, Our Responsibility" on Thursday, May 15, 2008, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The goals are to advance the immigration debate on Long Island and stimulate a multi-sector approach.

Historical Society Children's Art Exhibit
      The Garden City Historical Society is hosting its third annual Children Art Exhibit, "Architecture of Garden City," on the first two weekends in April. The Exhibit will include all of the artwork received from students in grades kindergarten through 12 who participated in this year's Juried Art Contest.

Faith In Action Sandwich-Making Events
      The Garden City Clergy Fellowship (GCCF) sponsors monthly Faith in Action events, where members of various faith communities gather together to make sandwiches and assemble bag lunches to feed the needy. Each lunch consists of a sandwich, cookies, a juice box, and a piece of fruit.

GCHS Art Students Design Google Logos
      More than 90 Students in Diane Veitch's art classes at Garden City High School have designed original logos for Google based on the theme, "What if...?," which required them to think about how they would like the future to differ from the present.

Yoga Classes At Community Church
      The Auxiliary of the Garden City Community Church will be continuing to offer yoga classes beginning the first week of April through the end of May. The schedule is: * Tuesday evenings (7:30-9 pm) April 1, 8,15, 29, May 6, 13, 20, and 27. There are no classes on April 22. The fee is $120 for 8 classes.

Autism Speaks Meets With Congresswoman
     Autism Speaks held their annual "Hill Day" in Washington DC on March 11. The group wanted to thank Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, who is one of the nation's leading advocates for Autism related services and research. The charity will hold its annual Jones Beach walk, which drew nearly 25,000 participants last year, on October 5, 2008.

Seniors Renew Vows On Valentine's Day
     Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray (left) joyfully presided over the renewal of vows for Sarah and Felix Iannacone of Garden City. The couple, who were first married on August 28, 1948, reaffirmed their love at the historic courtroom in Old Town Hall on Valentine's Day. Supervisor Murray noted, "It was wonderful to join with our local seniors who demonstrated that they are 'young at heart' and their love is ageless by renewing their vows." Adding to the festive atmosphere of the courtroom where the weddings took place, flower baskets were provided by Mormile Florists in Rockville Centre. In addition, Entenmann's Bakery in East Meadow donated a beautiful cake for the happy newlyweds, Sapienza Bake Shop furnished cookies and Pathmark and Wild By Nature generously contributed champagne (non-alcoholic) and other delicacies to nuptial celebrations for couples who "tied the knot." Each couple also received a special gift from Fortunoff's and a long-stemmed rose from 1-800-FLOWERS. "I wish to congratulate each of our Valentine's Day newlyweds and not-so- newlyweds and wish them the best of luck in the future," concluded Murray.

Troop 56 Having Busy Scout Year
      It has been a busy year so far for Boy Scout Troop 56. Since September the troop has been on several exciting outings. The new scout year kicked off in September with annual canoe trip on the Delaware River. This trip is always a favorite as the boys alternate between enjoying the scenery and engaging in water fights.

     First year brownie troops #1252 & #1253 got "electrified" together and had their hair standing on end with their very own Mad Scientist. The girls learned all about static electricity to complete their Science Wonders Try-It. A great time was had by all. Keep up the good work.
