GC Renegades Win Shamrock Shootout
Colin DeAngelo avoids defender
Just when everyone thought the day was going to be long, cold, and wet the weather changed for the better and the day couldn't have turned out any better. The GC Renegades started their season entering the Shamrock Shootout in the upper U11 division. Their first game was against the LI Express and after working out the cobwebs and getting use to being outside again the Renegades put their run and gun style to work. The Renegades took control from the very start and never looked back. Their first win of the season 9-2. The second game was against the host team LI Stampede. The Renegades picked up right where they left off in game one. They moved the ball well up and down the field. The Renegades especially cleared the ball well from sideline to sideline. The coaches always tell the boys that the team that wins the ground ball battle wins the game and the Renegades made sure they were all over the ground balls. It seemed like every time the ball was on the ground there were 2 or 3 Renegades there to fight for the possession which they clearly won. The end result was a second victory. The final game of the day which was for the Championship due to both teams being undefeated was against the Smithtown Elite 11's. The game went back and forth with both teams playing hard. It was anyone's game to win. At the final horn the game was still tied sending it into Brave Heart style overtime. A save or two later, solid clear, excellent ride and a bounce shot past the Smithtown goalie, the GC Renegades win the tournament 11-10.
James Sullivan gets to the loose ball
Highlights of the tournament had to be the goal tending of Connor Brown and Greg Gardner. The defense of Thomas Mascola, Matthew Borges, Justin Holloway and new comer to the defense Brian Colamussi didn't let anyone get a free shot on goal and anyone who thought they were paid the price. The attack of Liam Byrnes, Matthew Esposito, Jack Concannon, Joseph Parrinelli and Bryan Irwin controlled the offense. The middle of the field was patrolled by Scott Irwin, Colin DeAngelo, Brain Goulard, Chris Repetti, Kyle Brattan, Brian Goepfert, who had his first goal as a Renegade and James Sullivan who scored the final goal of the championship. Great way to start the season.
