High School Baseball Preview

2008-03-14 / Sports

Varsity baseball enters the 2008 season with an experienced squad. The Trojan roster includes 13 returning seniors. Coach Rich Smith enters his 36th season as head coach. Along with his coaching staff of Charles Menges (13 yrs.) and Mike Sweeney (8 yrs.), their outlook is cautious for the upcoming season.

With Nassau County baseball set up ability grouping, the Trojans will face a top 10 ranked team every time they suit up for a Conference Game. Maturity will play a large role in any success the team may experience this season. Coach Smith expects to open the season with an entire senior line-up. This should enable the Trojans to be competitive.

The pitching: staff will be led by Colin Ridgway (senior) and Pat Sylvester (senior). Andrew Cauchi, (senior) should complete the starting rotation in the three spot. Other seniors that will see time on the mound include Fred Stutzmann and Mike Manusi. Juniors Oliver Gullo, Dennis Rice, Anthony Cordeo, Jon DeMars, Jeff Kimball and Mike Regan round out the staff.

Catching duties will be the responsibility of seniors Paul Chielli and Matt Thaler. Sophomore Joe Tursi should see time behind the plate as well.

Sylvester and Ridgway will handle first base. Stutzmann and Junior Chris LeMonda will play second base. Cauchi and Cordio will play short stop. Senior Will Volz, along with Denis Rice will play third base. Terry Curtin (senior) is splitting time at third base and the outfield.

The outfield consist of Kevin Derle, Rob Fargnoli, Kyle Boelsen, Don McKennett and Mike Mancusi.

The Trojans will spend next week in southern Virginia as they make their 36th southern baseball trip. As usual the trip is under the direction of TMA Director, Frank Kiernan Sr.
