GCAA Travel Basketball
As the regular season winds down this weekend , eleven of our fourteen teams will be entering post season play in the highly competitive Island Garden Super League. Here's the highlights: GRANVILLE 5TH BOYS led by Chris Larkin, Brian Goulard and Tom Tubridy won their game against first place Jericho Friedman on Monday March 10th. After being down 28-18 early in the 3rd quarter, the team played inspired defense after a motivational speech by Coach Granville who emphasized the importance of defense and toughness. The final score was 41-30 as GCAA-Granville held their opponent to 2 points in the last 12 minutes of action while scoring 15 unanswered points. The team is now po-sitioned for a playoff run..........RAPHAEL 5TH GIRLS started the season 0-2, and since then are 11-3 and headed for playoffs. As a team we have made enormous progress, and each and every player has made solid contri-butions. Our best game of the year was against a Jericho team that had beaten us 18-6. We played them on their home court and our defense was relentless. We full-court pressed them the entire game and reversed the score of the earlier loss by winning 18-7. We were led in scoring that game by Becky Reifler, Alexis Leighton and Shannon Raphael. The girls have improved dramatically, and their skills are superb. Consistently, our playmakers and assist leaders are Anne Marie Kane, Samantha Auricchio and Johanna Sokolovic. We are usually led in scoring by Kelly McDonnell, Alexis Leighton and Becky Rei-fler. Our best rebounders and defenders are Shannon Raphael, Morgayne Rix and Gianna Esposito, and when she is healthy, Katie Roscoe is a terrific scorer and defender. This terrific season has been a total team effort, and we look forward to the playoffs.........This past weekend KIFFEL 8TH GIRLS improved to 13-3 and are in first place going into the last week of the season. The recent wins were led by the three point shooting of Jess Stein, the defense and rebounding of Katie Trimmer and Julia Kiffel, and the ball handling of Marissa Cameron and Caitlin McGuinness. The girls are all playing great team basketball and stifling defense - in the win over Brentwood the GCAA defense held them to only 25 points, 15 points under their season average. Over the past 4 years these girls have won over 80% of their games and look to continue their winning ways as they enter the play-offs.........BASEL 5TH GIRLS have continued to improve as the season progressed, led by the pressing defense of Cailee McCarthy. Laurel Nothel and Laurel Fisher. With Kathleen Burke, Fiona MacLeod and Alison Hoge scoring and Emily Basile, Kerriann Erenwein and Ari Kerantzas rebounding this team looks forward to finishing strong. Thanks to the ballhandling of Leslie Wann, Emma Basel and Meaghan Fitzgerald this team will be a force to be reckoned with in the near future!!.......CAPETOLA 4TH BOYS are 15-3 and the #1 seed in their division.....KELLY 4TH GIRLS are 10-6, as of this writing, and will have the most wins of any 4th grade girls team in the IG.....KELLY 6TH BOYS are presently 13-3, which means they clinch the regular season title in their divi-sion.........for complete standings, schedules and playoff matchups, please check the league website at www.islandgarden.com.
