The following students were named to the Garden City High School Honor Rolls for the second quarter. Students who achieve an unweighted grade point average of 91 and above are awarded Principal's Honors. Students who achieve an unweighted grade point average between 87 and 90.99 are awarded First Honors. Students who achieve an unweighted grade point aver-age between 83 and 86. More ... Stratford School second-graders brainstormed about constructive and amiable ways people use their hands to express themselves and other acceptable methods of self-expression in February during a 45-minute interactive workshop conducted by visitors from the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Inc. Students at Hemlock, Homestead, and Locust schools celebrated the 100th day of the academic year in February with a series of activities designed to inspire interest in and understanding of mathematics. At Hemlock School, Principal Audrey Bellovin launched the day in a wizard costume decorated with numbers, groups of objects totaling 100, and a picture of her 100-year-old grandmother. More ... The annual Science Fair was held last Thursday and was an outstanding success. Independent judges were invited to view the research projects from the seventh and eighth grades. Two judges visited every project and questioned each student on their hypothesis and the ins and outs of their research. More ... WLNY TV/55 has selected Stratford Avenue School Teacher Madelyn Keegan as a WLNY TV/55 Educator of the Week. The program honors teachers who "go beyond the ordinary to create a positive impact on students and the teaching process." More ... The graduating class of 2008 celebrated their high school acceptances by wearing to school the sweatshirts of the schools they will be attending in Sep-tember. Represented are: Chaminade, Our Lady of Mercy, St. Dominic, Kellenberg and Sacred Heart. More ... The grand tradition of building a cereal box structure is alive and well in the Pre-K classes at St. Joseph's School. Mrs. Leoneko's and Mrs. Conway's classes started early in designing their houses and then collecting the necessary empty cereal boxes. Then, construction began. There was stacking, taping and cutting. Adding a chimney, mailboxes and windows came next. More ... Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice, left, with her nephew Will, a fifth-grader at Stratford Avenue School, and Will's teacher Leigh Dowden, visited Stratford School in February to speak with students about her job and the responsibilities of the district attorney's office. The presen-tation included a vigorous question and answer period during which students learned about local government, current cases they had recently researched, and the dangers of drinking and driving.
