Pack 55 Webelos Hike Muttontown Preserve
      Fourth grade Webelos Scouts from Pack 55 hiked the trails of Muttontown Preserve. Scouts earned the Naturalist badge with their guide on their outdoor adventure. We learned about native plants and poisonous plants. Scouts were informed that ticks are dangerous but can be prevented by staying on the trails and not walking in the tall grass.

Women Of Resurrection Meet For Tea
      Tea and tee shirts made a great combination at the Ladies' Tea held recently at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Garden City. About 90 women attended and enjoyed good company, delicious sandwiches, and baked goods as well as a variety of hot teas. The tee shirts provided a starting point for many conversations.

Foundation Awards Grant To Cancer Researcher
      The Miracle Foundation announced that it has awarded a $100,000 grant to Dr. Bert Vogelstein, of Johns Hopkins' Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, for his continued work on cancer-eating bacteria. This brings to a total over $500,000 in grant funding which the Foundation has awarded Dr. Vogelstein, the most cited cancer researcher in the world.

Ambrosino Applauds Valentines For Vets Pupils
     Hempstead Town Councilman Edward Ambrosino (4th right, back row) gathers with students at Homestead Elementary School in Garden City to thank them for their participation in the Valentines for Vets program, which the Town instituted in 2001. Through this program students create valentines to send to veterans in local VA hospitals. The councilman collects the valentines and brings them to a veteran's organization, which then delivers them to the hospitalized veterans. Many of these men and women don't have families and it means so much to them to know that the young children appreciate them for the sacrifices they have made for our nation. Also pictured with the students are Principal Dr. Suzanne Viscovich and teachers Michelle Abatemarco, Keri Connelly, Christine Kenney, Christine Oppedisano, Stephanie Presti, Jennifer Solano and Laura Burke.

Pack 55 Webelos Scouts Are Athletes
      The Panda Den in Pack 55 are not couch potatoes! The 4th grade Webelos Scouts worked on their Athlete Badge at their last den meeting. Mr. Kiley, a local coach, showed the boys how to warm up for exercise. The scouts practiced stretching, push ups, sit ups and agility relays. They learned to be active and stay fit. Stretching is important before sports games so you don't hurt yourself.

     Seventh Grader Jacqueline Ferri was one of the first users of the newly installed computers in The Garden City Public Library's newly enlarged and renovated Young Adult area. The Library has installed four new computers and a black and white printer for students in grades 6 -12. Software available includes Internet Explorer, which is always filtered, Powerpoint, Publisher, and Word.
