Grappler Wins County Wrestling Championship

2008-03-07 / Sports

Michael Lofrese, an 8th grader at the Garden City Middle School jumps for joy after winning the 96lb. High School Championship over Alex Grant, a 10th grader from McArthur High School. Lofrese was leading by one point at the end of both the first and second periods but was down in the third by one point when he threw a 5 point move to put Grant to his back where he held him until the clock ran out. It was an exciting 10-6 victory for the 8th grader who never once lost his composure in the two day tournament. Lofrese is the first 8th grader in Nassau County history to be a County Champ and was the only champion to wrestle from an unseeded pigtail match to the finals. He now travels to the state tournament in Rochester NY with the Section VIII team. Michael has been a member of the Garden City Grapplers Youth Team coached by Wrestling Hall of Famer Paul Gillespie for the past 4 years and is the first "Grappler" to win the county title. The Garden City Grapplers have an elite tournament team that they hope will produce many more county champs and place winners in the near future. In the next few years the wrestlers coming out of the Grappler's program will make a huge impact at the high school level for Garden City and Nassau County.
