Assemblyman Thomas McKevitt To Address Residents
The Garden City Republican Club wishes to extend an invitation to all residents to join us Wednesday, March 12, at 8:00 PM at the Garden City Senior Recreation Center, located on the corner of Golf Club Lane and Eleventh Street for their upcoming meeting. Guest speaker for March's meeting is our State Assemblyman Thomas McKevitt.
Tom, a lifelong resident of Nassau County and a devoted public servant, received his Bachelor of Arts from Hofstra University where he graduated first in his class. While he pursued his law degree he was editor of the Hofstra Law Review. He also served as an intern for New York State's Supreme Court and Attorney General's Office. After working in the offices of state Senator Kemp Hannon and U.S. Senator Alfonse D'Amato, Tom became a Deputy Town of Hempstead Attorney for nearly nine years winning cases before New York's highest court, the Court of Appeals, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He has also practiced privately with law firms in Nassau County.
First elected to the Assembly in a special election in February 2006, Tom McKevitt is currently the ranking minority member on the Committee on Mental Health, and also serves on the Judiciary, Small Business, and Social Services Committees. One of Assemblyman McKevitt's main priorities is to make sure Long Island receives its fair share of funding for schools and that those funds go directly to the classroom. Other items on his agenda include expanding STAR property tax relief, preserving the EPIC prescription drug program, and improving the general quality of life in the 17th District.
Assemblyman McKevitt is a member of the American and New York State Bar Associations, is the Chair of the Municipal Law Committee and Vice-Chair of the Professional Ethics Committee of the Nassau County Bar Association, and is Editor-in-Chief of the Nassau Lawyer, the Association's monthly newspaper. He has been asked to deliver numerous lectures on land use and zoning enforcement throughout the state. McKevitt believes strongly in the value of community service, as evidenced by his membership in the East Meadow Kiwanis Club and the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, as well as his mentorship of students at the Woodland Middle School and coach of the Holy Trinity Diocesan High School Mock Trial Team.
The Club is pleased to welcome Assemblyman McKevitt and residents to take this time and opportunity to meet our Assemblyman. Tom is the proud father of his first born and resides in East Meadow with his wife, Samantha, who is a public school social studies teacher. Tom's Mom has worked many years here at St. Anne's School so many may already have met his mother. All residents are invited to attend and enjoy refreshments as well.
