With Athena
With Athena Spring will soon be with us and the magazines are filled with spring styles giving us hints as to what we will be wearing very soon. I don't know about you, but when I look at these styles I know what I won't be wearing. In fact, if you look through the racks at the stores you must wonder what the designers are thinking. I am happy to go home and shop through my closet to find what I will be wearing. If you really look at the workmanship of the clothes, you will also get the feeling that they could easily self destruct (the seams that is) on the way home from the stores. Is it any wonder that sales are down?

Michele Dyrland shared her Valentine's Day (well, a few days after) with her friends from her Red Hat Society group and the ladies turned out with their red hats and happy smiles. In addition, they got a chance to view Michele's brand new kitchen and sample some fancy goodies made in it.

Laurie Hazlitt will be showing her beautiful silver jewelry at the Mercy Hospital Luncheon at the Cherry Valley Club this coming March 6th and, believe me, she does some very fine and individual pieces. When you attend, make sure you take a look at her things.

The Garden City Casino's Ladies Lunch/Bridge was held this past week and enjoying the afternoon were: Carol Ethimiou, Helen Schroeder, Louise Butler, Harriet Carotenuto, Valerie Lemkul, and many more happy ladies. It's always a nice day when the ladies can get together over a deck of cards.

Trudy Anderson is doing well after a bout in the hospital and she says she will soon be back at the bridge table. Good news Trudy as you have been missed.

One of Garden City's favorite events will soon NOT BE HAPPENING and by now you know that it is the Phantom Ball, which will not be held on May 3rd. This year Ande Giarraputo and Mimi Haeffner will be co-chairing the non-event for the benefit of the Garden City Unit of the American Cancer Society. When the invitation arrives, all you have to do is send a check. That means you can enjoy the evening any way you want and not have to get all gussied-up and hire a baby-sitter, so enjoy it by supporting this wonderful group in their fight against cancer.

The Cherry Valley Club held its Dinner/Bridge this past week and the winners of the first Small Slam in 6 Diamonds were Beth O'Neill and Marge Dunn. No Grand Slam was dealt, bid, and made, but there were three winners of the three boxes of Godiva candy and they were Warren Finnell, Marian Imacin, and Marian Bursch. In attendance also were Suzanne Barnes, Marie Scott, Adele Riley, Eleanor Singer, Bill and Barbara Haynes, and Mead and Ruth Brown. A good time was had by all. There were 23 tables in all.

The Long Island Choral Society will be presenting Gounod's "St. Cecilia Mass" and Cesar Franck's "Psalm 150" at the Cathedral of the Incarnation on Sunday, March 9th at 4p.m. Tickets at the Door are $25, advance sale is $18. This i s their 79th season and they are very good.

Happy birthday wishes go to Douglas Dieterich, who will be celebrating on March 1st, while Mary Gagliardo will do her celebrating on March 6th. May both have a wonderful day, a great year and nothing but health and happiness for many more birthdays to come.

You can visit the Galapagos Islands without leaving this area if you attend the March 9th Fireside Chat at Clark Botanic Garden. It starts at 1 p.m. and the speaker will be Mickey Maxwell Cohen, a recognized Galapagos expert who will give a slide illustrated tour of "Darwin's Island." Come and join the fun for $10 for members, $12 for non-members. Refreshments will be served.
