News From The Children's Room Leap Into Leap Year

It's Leap Year! Come to the Library and leap into a good story! Use the Internet and find out what Leap Year means and when it started. Check out a folk tale and read a story about another culture or borrow a Tall Tale and read about someone larger than life! Ever wonder what the difference is between a folk tale, fairy tale, legend, and tall tale? Come to the library, have an adventure, and find out!

Read To A Dog

The program "Read To A Dog" with Bide-A-Wee volunteers will be held on Saturday, March 1st at 2:00 PM for children in Grades 1-5. Registration is required. The dogs love to have stories read to them. The children will select a book with the help of the librarians, and read the story to the dogs! The program will begin at 2:00 PM with allotted time slots. Children must be present 15 minutes before their starting time. Space is limited to 20 children with a short waiting list of 5 names. If you need to cancel, please call the Children's Room so another child may participate.

Bide-A-Wee have asked that all children who sign up, contribute from a wish list which will be available on the day of registration. Donations can be made in the form of food, toys, or blankets, and any patron is welcome to contribute. This program is for Garden City residents only.

Special Needs Collection

Come visit the Children's Room to take a look at the new Special Needs collection. There are books available dealing with a wide range of issues - including health issues like eating Gluten Free, asthma, Diabetes, Autism, deafness, as well as having a friend with a special need. Currently there are books, DVDs and videos, and games available. The collections will continue to be expanded in the future.

Story Times and Book Discussions

Winter story times continue with some openings still available. Check with a librarian in the children's room at (516)742-8405, ext. 216 or register on line at www.gardencitypl.org .

Book club discussions continue with the next title Stanley in Space by Jeff Brown for the Second Grade, Chapter Chats scheduled for March 5th. New Friends In A Book (3rd Graders) will meet March 26th to discuss Goosed by Bill Wallace. Go Forth (4th Graders) will also meet on March 26th to discuss Who Stole The Wizard of Oz by Avi. Page Turners (5th Graders) will meet on March 31st to discuss Wish Giver by Bill Brittain.

Please check the library website www.gardencitypl.org for upcoming events and registration dates. Funding for these programs has been provided by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Priority for registration and participation is given to children who are Garden City Public Library cardholders.

Arctic Adventure

Wednesday, March 5th at 2:00PM

Come and take an adventure cruise to the most northerly island in Canada -Ellesmere Island on Wednesday March 5th at 2:00 PM at The Garden City Public Library. Visit the Inuit communities and ancient Eskimo sights. Hike along the face of a glacier and visit an iso-lated weather station. Helicopter over Ellesmere Island and learn about the ill-fated Franklin Expedition. Spend an hour in the far off world of the High Arctic. This slide/lecture program presented by world travel expert Laurie Campbell will be a fascinating look into this not often visited area of our world. There is no registration and all are welcome. Hotel Paradise Book Discussion

March 5th at 10 a.m.

The Garden City Public Library will host a book discussion on Martha Grimes' Hotel Paradise on Wednesday, March 5th at 10 a.m. Gloria Weinrich will moderate the book discussion, which will be held in the Library's downstairs meeting room. Participation is limited to 30 people. No registration is necessary. Copies of the book are available at the Library's reference desk.

Acclaimed mystery writer Martha Grimes weaves an intricate suspense story filled with compelling characters in Hotel Paradise. Told from the point of view of the bright, 12 year old Emma Graham, the book follows Emma's obsessive investigation into the drowning death of another 12 year old forty years ago. Hotel Paradise leaves readers replaying Grimes' story over and over and anxious to discuss this unusual who-dun-it.

Three Apples Book Award Winner Announced

Congratulations to Dave Pelzer, author of A Child Called "It" on winning the 3 Apples Book Award, a New York State Teen's Choice Award! Thank you to all the Garden City Young Adults who participated by voting. Watch for the notice to begin the nomination process for the 2009 award.

Young Adult Room Open

The renovations are nearly completed on the Young Adult area of the library. While the finishing touches await completion, the room is open for use. Come on in and test the new furnishings while becoming familiar with the new set up. Carts of books are awaiting those 7th graders, who have a large Social Studies assignment.

Fruit and Vegetable Carvings

Registration will begin on Saturday March 1st when the library opens at 9 AM for a fruit and vegetable carving workshop. Join Rona Madri to learn how to make artwork for the table out of fruits and vegetables. Participants will use safe tools to carve, chop and shape fruits and vegetables into adorable animals, funny faces, or anything else your imagination desires. The workshop will take place on Saturday, March 15th at 2 PM. Registration is limited to those in grades 6-12. Priority is given to Garden City Public Library cardholders.

April Yak & Snack

Just in time for the start of baseball season, Mike Lupica's book Heat has been selected for the next Yak & Snack,, which is scheduled for April 12 at 2PM. Sports writer Mike Lupica has hit another home run with this YA novel. The story addresses the issues of brothers, orphans, illegal aliens, and baseball. Pitching prodigy, Michael Arroyo is on the run from social services after being banned from playing Little League baseball because rival coaches question his age. He is only 12 but without parents has no proof of this. What are your thoughts? Tell us at the book discussion. Re-freshments will be served.

Seated Aerobics

Friends To Sponsor Clearance Sale

By popular request, The Friends of the Library will sponsor the second annual paperback clearance sale on Saturday, March 8th from 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All your favorite authors will be available at the bargain price of 10¢ each or 1 2 for a $1. In addition, this year will also feature kiddie books at the same low prices.

Those who purchase 12 books will also get a free library tote bag.
