      Two Garden City residents who have students in the Middle School expressed concerns about the safety of the dismissal process at the Feb. 25th Garden City Board of Education meeting. On Feb. 25th, the district closed the circular fire lane located on the side of the middle school on Cherry Valley Avenue.

Resurrection Lutheran Church To Host Choir
      The members and friends of Resurrection invite all in the community to a choir concert on Friday, March 7, 2008, at 7:00 PM. The A Cappella Choir from Concordia Lutheran High School, Fort Wayne, Indiana, is a 52-member mixed ensemble of upperclassmen, one of five choirs from the school. Each year the choir engages in a tour to share a concert of sacred music.

Annual PTA Dinner
      The annual PTA Dinner will be held on April 10, 2008 at 6:30 PM at the Inn at New Hyde Park, on Jericho Turnpike, in New Hyde Park. The PTA Dinner Committee will be selling grand raffle tickets and admission tickets in advance of the event. The cost of admission will be $60.00. Friends Donate TV To Library
      Marge Kelly, Young Adult librarian (l) and Laura Flanagan, reference librarian, are shown with a 26" flat TV set with DVD player which was recently donated to the library by The Friends of the Library. Many Village organizations who utilize the small meeting room at the library had long expressed a need for such a set as compared with the alternative of using the large meeting room.

      The first Woman's Club of Garden City Bridge for 2008 was held on Monday, Jan 7, at the Garden City Casino. Bridge Chairman Gloria Mentzel welcomed everyone to a luscious dessert and coffee hour followed by bridge. Lucky bucks were won by Yuette Slattery and Gloria Mentzel.

Gung Hay Fat Choi To All From Locust School
      Students paraded around Locust School on February 7 to usher in the Chinese Year of the Rat with dragon puppets, musical instruments, and a great big Gung Hay Fat Choi (Happy New Year) to all. The students also read about Chinese culture, listened to Chinese mu-sic, and completed many projects related to the holiday.

Actors Reminisce
      In February 1957, approximately 20 Garden City residents enrolled in an Adult Education course (now called Continuing Education) on Techniques of Acting. At the conclusion of the eight-week course, the participants thought it would be a good idea to form a community theatre. Under the leadership and guidance of the late Ted Colvin, the Garden City Little Theatre was born in June 1957.

      Susan Petry, longtime resident of Garden City, will be honored by Adelphi University with an art exhibit entitled MUSINGS at the Swirbul Library Gallery (One South Avenue, Garden City.) The exhibit runs from March 2nd through April 15th, with an opening reception on March 6th at 4:30.

     Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray (fourth right) thanks P.S. Sasi Kumar (fourth left) of the Indian Consul General's office, the committee members who helped put together the Town of Hempstead 5th Annual India Republic Day Ceremony and the keynote speaker for the event. The January 22nd celebration, which was hosted by the Town of Hempstead and held at the Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion at Town Hall, is Long Island's only ceremony commemorating the establishment of India as a Republic and its liberation from British rule. Hannon Helps "Give Kids A Smile"
     New York State Senator Kemp Hannon, Chair of the Senate Health Committee, recently volunteered to help more than 1,700 children from Long Island schools receive free dental screenings and oral hygiene instruction, as part of the "Give Kids a Smile" event sponsored by the Nassau County Dental Society and held in Nassau County's Cradle of Aviation Museum. The Give Kids A Smile program is a "national model" for oral health care access, bringing the dental profession and corporate sponsors together for the benefit of the nation's children, said Dr. Mark J. Feldman, ADA president.

Homestead School 'Star Of The Week'
     During the week Feb 11-15, five year old Michael Bareswill was named "Star of the Week" for Mrs. Kristen Thompson's kindergarten class at the Homestead Primary School. As part of the school's "Star of the Week" program, Michael's father, Joseph, was asked to read his son's favorite Beluga Whale story to all of Mrs. Thompson's students, while 'The Star' cuddled his Beluga whale stuffed doll.
