Girls Are Conference Champs!
2008 Conference Champions!
The Varsity girls track team has begun the championship part of their schedule by capturing the Conference 3 title with an overwhelming victory over Mepham and Hewlett by more than 100 points. The girls went into the meet at Suffolk Community College last Monday confident and ready. Head coach Erica Fregosi, along with Tom Skrivanek and George Lucas, have put the girls through some strenuous preparations the past week but they paid off, as they have all season.
The girls dominated the meet early and often scoring points in every event and taking the top spot in 6 of the 11 events - exceptional results from an exceptional team! Leading the way for Garden City was Emily Menges with two first place finishes in the 300m (in a school recordtime) and the 1000m, Maddie Adams in the 3000m, Michelle Rotondo in the high jump, Tara Mahon in the 55m and Molly Josephs with a school record in the 1500 race walk. Molly's time also puts her in ninth place in the nation and a qualifier for the Nationals next month. The 4x800 relay team of Aoi Nishimura, Jenna DeAngelo, Victoria Chimento and Liz Slattery also took first place. Congratulations to these Conference Champions.

Garden City girls also produced 30 All Conference performances. In addition to the above, the following girls take home conference honors: Brooke Senken in the 1000m, 1500m and 4x200, Michelle Rotondo in the 1000 and 55H, Taryn Schmelzinger in the 55m, 300m and 4x400, Lauren 'Stick' Williams in the 55H, long jump & triple jump, Jenna DeAngelo in the 600m, Aoi Nishimura in the 600m, Liz Slattery in the 3000m, Caroline Hohlman in the shot put, freshman Lauren Williams in the high jump, Maddie Adams, Tara Mahon, Laura Martens in the 4x400 and Brittany Stufano, Rachel Dooley and Katie Reilly in the 4x200 relay.
Following up the conference meet, the girls now face the tough challenge of the County Championship meet tomorrow at SCC. The competition tightens up in the county meet as our girls face off against perennial powers East Meadow and Uniondale. The girls will look to duplicate or better some of the many personal bests that they have achieved this season.
Emily Menges is first in the 1000m
And if that's not enough to think about, coming out of tomorrow's meet, the girls will then move on to the individual County Championships and State qualifier meet on Monday against the best of Long Island. Good luck throughout the championship season!
