Another car accident involving teen drivers was reported on Long Island this week. Three teens from Longwood High School in Middle Island were injured when the driver, age 17, lost control of the car after hitting a large puddle.

It seems that every year, particularly in the spring semester, there are an increasing number of these accidents, even as the state tightens restrictions on young drivers.

We wonder if all parents of teens are taking the time to read the "fine print" when their youngsters first get their drivers licenses or permits. While it appears that the driver in the Middle Island crash had not broken any rules (no traffic citations were issued) there have been other crashes in which the young drivers had not followed the rules. In January, two teens died in Woodbury after the driver, who only had a learner's permit, was speeding and lost control of the car.

Whether the accidents are caused by lack of experience or poor judgment, teens need the guidance of their parents when it comes to driving. Not all teens are mature enough to drive at 17, and even those who are may need more experience than they get through driver's ed courses. Take the time to give it to them.Parents can familiarize themselves with the rules for young drivers at: www.nydmv.state.ny.us/broch/c41.htm
