DAR Sponsors Display Case

2008-02-08 / Community

February is American History Month, and the Colonel Aaron Ogden Chapter of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, is pleased to be sponsoring the display cases in the Garden City Public Library in celebration of the event. The focus of this month's display is "Spies of the American Revolution".

There are spies who are well known to history, such as Nathan Hale and Paul Revere, and some who turned traitor, such as Benedict Arnold. But do you know that George Washington worked closely with a spy ring on Long Island? Do you know that one courageous Long Island woman hung her laundry in such as way as to signal an exchange of information to help the colonists?

It is estimated that approximately 500 people were engaged as spies in some capacity during the American Revolution. We encourage you to come to the library during the month of February to see the display and learn more about a little known aspect of American History.
