The Garden City Library had a really full house for last week's movie with every seat filled. Among those attending were Lee Amrheim, Paula Riga, Nancy Fardleman, and Regina Dowlling all who were enjoying the afternoon. They just don't make movie like that any more and you can see by the attendance they are what most folks like and want. Keep up the good work - Sal and Tom - the gentlemen who run the movies and thought up the idea.
One lady who was a regular over the years, Doris Stewart, will be missing. Doris fell and broke her hip a couple of weeks ago and again Sal Catania and Tom Richmond had a flyer with Get Well wishes on it for her many friends to sign. Unfortunately, Doris passed away last week and there was a service for her at the Cathedral of The Incarnation this past Monday. Doris was predeceased by her husband of many years Oliver Stewart, both active members of the Cathedral. Doris, an avid bridge player, played for many years at the Garden City Country Club with her friends, and had recently taken up Mah-Jong and was having a good time playing that along with her bridge games. Doris will be missed by all her friends along with her ready smile and willingness to join in. Our prayers and thoughts are with her family in their time of sorrow. She will be missed by all.
Another lady also passed away recently was Marilyn O'Brien. She and her late husband Judge Edward O'Brien Marilyn playing bridge in the Marathon Bridge group at the Garden City Branch of A.A.U.W. and in the Cathedral's Couples Club. She was also active in the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead where she was a member of their Garden Department and their Literary Series. Both Marilyn and Ed were sailors and could always be found in the summers sailing on Long Island Sound and cruising up the New England Coast. They were members of the Sewanhaka-Corinthian Yacht Club on Center Island. They were also members of the Garden City Casino, where Marilyn played tennis. Our thoughts and prayers are with her sons, their wives, and her grandchildren. She will be missed by all who knew her - a lovely lady with a ready smile and a terrific sense of humor. We are poorer for her loss.
Sally Richmond will be sharing the Joy of Reading Group for the A.A.U.W. and the book will be "Embers" by Sander Marai. It will take place on Wednesday, February 20th at 12:30 p.m. when Georgene Harrison will lead the discussion. Copies are available at the Reference Desk at the Garden City Library. It's good to see so many reading.
Happy birthday wishes go to Irene Christie, who will celebrate her special day (along with her twin brother) on February 13th. Alice Mara will also be celebrating her birthday on the 14th of February, a Valentine Lady to be sure, and we wish all the happy celebrants all the best of the day, and a year filled with both health and happiness with many more years to come.
Did you know that Long Island's average temperature for January is 29.2 degrees Fahrenheit and the average snowfall is 8.6 inches? Since we did much better than that, we have nothing to complain about. Happy Valentine's Day to one an all.
See you next week!
