Friends' Museum Passes A Success
A pleased-as-punch Marjorie Maher returns her free Museum of Natural History pass to Tom Witt, Assistant Director of the Library. Mrs. Maher recently took her out-of-town grandson to the museum. "Not only did the pass give us free admission," she said, "but there was a long line waiting to pay and we just walked right in."
The free museum pass system was inaugurated last year and funded by The Friends of the Library. In addition to the Natural History Museum, free passes are available to The Brooklyn Museum, The Brooklyn Children's Museum and Old Westbury Gardens. Over 75 Garden City families have taken advantage of this new program.
In response to many request, The Friends will provide additional funding in 2008 for additional museum including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Guggenheim Museum.
Information about the free museum passes may be obtained by consulting the Reference Desk.
Book Discussion Group
Gloria Weinrich, Panel Moderator, has announced the title of the book to be discussed on Wednesday, March 5th at 10 a.m. in the downstairs meeting room.
Hotel Paradise by Martha Grimes etches an enchanting portrait of spunky Emma Graham, the 12 year old narrator, an incorrigibly inquisitive girl who is tethered to table-waiting responsibilities in her family's frayed-at-the-edges resort hotel. She has a consuming interest in the death by drowning of another 12 year old girl 40 years ago. Her inquisitive nature leads her to seek the facts behind this death.
Participation is limited to 30 people and no registration is necessary. Copies of the book may be picked up at the Reference Desk beginning on Tuesday, February 5.

Lunch Bag
Book Talk: The Thirteenth Tale
Reference Librarians Mrs. Flanagan and Mrs. Byrne are pleased to be spicing up Valentine's Day with another popular Lunch Bag Book Talk on Thursday, February 14th from 12:00 to 2:00. The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield has been selected. The Thirteenth Tale is a gripping and spellbinding novel with a haunting quality. The story within the story extends beyond mesmerizing in a way that will transfix every reader.
Author Diane Setterfield has a gift for making each beautifully constructed sentence draw her reader deeper into her tale. Hairs will prick the napes of necks when she introduces the girl in the mist, and goose bumps will rise on arms when Margaret meets Aurelius Love. Throughout the story, the three-dimensional sense of emotion literally pulses with Margaret's despair, her elation, and then her loss.
Registration, which begins Sunday, January 27, is limited to Garden City residents and must be done in person. Remember to bring lunch. Drinks and desserts will be supplied. For further information, contact Laura Flanagan at The Garden City Public Library at 742-8405.
