Song And Story At Irish Society Meeting

2008-02-01 / Community

The Irish Cultural Society brings back the popular singer and seanachie (story teller) Jim Hawkins for its February 12 meeting at 8 p.m. at the Garden City Library, 60 Seventh Street, across the street from the Garden City Hotel. All are invited.

Jim Hawkins' talent is often on display in local libraries and at the Irish American Center in Mineola. An English teacher by day and an entertainer in the evening, Mr. Hawkins has sharpened his skills and repertoire over many years. His shows have included his declamation of Robert Emmet's "Speech from the Dock" and his telling of charming Irish tales. He has written a series on Irish story telling for The Hedgemaster, the newsletter of the Irish Cultural Society. Mr. Hawkins' shows also include his singing of the familiar and the unusual from the songs of Ireland. His show at the Irish Cultural Society meeting will include a story centered on the bodhrán, a Gaelic drum, and a tribute to the late Tommy Makem. Jim Hawkins will set the stage for his audience for the array of Irish-oriented shows coming as we approach St. Patrick's Day.

At the meeting, President Martin Kelly will fill in the details of the Society's participation in the Garden City/Mineola St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 2 and describe the writing contest project recently mailed to all of the high schools in Nassau County.
