Students at Hemlock School put kindness, the November character trait of the month, into action last month. During November, students in Eryn Maher's first-grade class pledged to read 100 books for charity. The students kept track of their progress and met their collective goal. As a result, Scholastic Book Club will donate 100 books to children in need on behalf of the class. The school also conducted a non-perishable Thanksgiving Food Drive for Island Harvest, a local organization that helps Long Island families in need.
At Garden City primary schools, a character trait is featured each month as part of the District's Character Education Program. Each primary school student receives a Passport to Good Character. Throughout the year, the students earn stamps each time they display the character trait of the month. Among the character traits featured during the year are friendship, sharing, caring, cooperation, courage, and fairness.
