Guest Speaker Sheds New Light On Nativity
By Janice Lamback

Dr. Paul Maier (right) autographs a copy of his book, The Flames of Rome, for Pastor Jeff Browning. As Resurrection's Pastor or Programs and Activities, Browning suggested inviting Dr. Maier as special guest speaker for the recent Congregational Breakfast. Browning will conduct a discussion of the book at the church, Wed., Jan 16.
On a chilly, blustery December Saturday morning, the congregation of The Lutheran Church of the Resurrection came out en masse to welcome guest speaker Dr. Paul Maier to their Congregational Breakfast.

Fortified by a delicious breakfast and warmed by piping hot cups of tea and coffee, the near capacity crowd was ready to hear Dr. Maier- distinguished author, scholar of ancient history, and Second Vice President of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod- shed "New Light on the Nativity." His seminar-like lecture was both enlightening and entertaining.

Within a very short time, Dr. Maier captivated his audience using historical, archeological, and collaborative written accounts-hard evidence from the ancient world to dramatically support the New Testament's record of Jesus, proving without a shadow of a doubt Jesus' life on earth-from his birth in what was more a cave than the "wooden farm shed" depicted during the Christmas season, to his death, where he was laid to rest in a cave-like tomb-to his glorious resurrection.

With a wonderful mix of secular and sacred, Dr. Maier's lecture was more than informative. Each in attendance became witnesses that wintry morning. What better way to begin Advent having the true meaning of Christmas firmly in our grasp.

Resurrection is a multi-site Christian community of faith. All are invited to worship at 5:30 PM on Saturdays and at 8:30 and 11 AM Sunday mornings, with Christian Education at 9:45 AM at the 420 Stewart Avenue location in Garden City.
