Events that unfolded in 1692 had seventh-graders at Garden City Middle School on the edge of their seats this fall, as the ArtsPower National Touring Theater presented Salem Justice, an original play about a 17th century family coping with the infamous witch trials that occurred in Salem, Massachusetts, more than 300 years ago.

The play personalizes the story, portraying the relationship between two adolescent cousins, Elizabeth and Abigail, and the Reverend Parris, Elizabeth's father and the town's minister. It emphasizes the importance of speaking the truth, even at great cost, and vividly illustrates that consequences can be dire when good people remain silent.

The tale is especially relevant for middle school students, who themselves are often grappling with peer pressure and the consequences of their decisions.

The presentation of Salem Justice was coordinated by the Arts in Education Committee of the Garden City School District Parent-Teacher Association and funded by the Garden City Union Free School District.
