The lights have been going on all over lately, the Christmas tree lights that is, and here in Garden City the Garden City Hotel's tree was first in line. After their tree was lit, they held a gala reception for many of the guests who attended. Next came New York City's tree at Rockefeller Center. That always draws a goodly crowd, but many here in town saw it lit from the comfort of their own living rooms via television. The Garden City Country Club's tree was lit soon after and I'm sure the Cherry Valley Club's was lit about the same time. Many of the homes in town got their decorations and lights up while we were still enjoying warm temperatures and they are a sight to behold. You can enjoy them when you drive around town at night. For the theater lovers the most important lights that went on again on were Broadway announcing that the shows were on again after 19 days in the dark. Last, but not least, was the Village's lighting of their trees and they were thoughtful enough to provide a Christmas touch with snow. All that was missing was Bing Crosby and "White Christmas."

Two families in town had a special light all their own as both families welcomed a new granddaughter into the family. Betty and H ank P upke's daughter and son-in-law welcomed their new daughter into the family just in time for Thanksgiving, making it a true Thanksgiving time for one and all. Margaret and Peter Arcese also welcomed a new granddaughter into their family via their son and daughter-in-law and Grandma's face was beaming better than any of those Christmas lights. Welcome to the two little charmers as babies are truly the light of all our lives.

Adelphi University has put on many a wonderful free event and the one held on November 27th was another one of them. They had Blanche Cook on "Eleanor Roosevelt and the Ongoing Struggle for Human Rights." Both the reception and the speaker were marvelous and enjoying the evening were: Noel Burks, Marianne Scaco, Marge Schnell, and Barbara Smith.

Isabel Scriba, a long time resident of Garden City, passed away recently. Isabel was active in the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead, which she joined in 1959, and in their Garden Department for many years. She had also been a member of the Garden City Historical Society and, when the house was in its original location, she arranged for a Victorian landscaper to design and put in a Victorian garden. Isabel was always full of ideas and also willing to help put them into practice. She was in her nineties at the time of her passing and will be remembered by all who knew her as a kind and knowledgeable lady.
