Garden City was well-represented at the American Association of University Women's inter-branch conference at St. Joseph's College on October 20. Attendees included Jane Cox, Joan Stafford, Sylvia Ebert with boon companion Zelda, and Margaret Delahunt.
The meeting's theme was "What Every Woman Wants - Equity," addressed by Lisa Maatz, director of public policy and government relations for AAUW. Ms. Maatz, AAUW's top policy advisor in Washington, talked about women's critical public policy issues currently moving through Congress and what's at stake for women in the 2008 election. She also shared her experiences in helping to further legislation that supports opportunities for women and their families.
There was also a review by Suffolk County Community College professor Nancy Ellis, Esq., of the AAUW research report "Behind the Pay Gap." It found that women are paid less than their male counterparts in their first jobs after graduating from college and are even farther behind 10 years later.
