In Memoriam
Mr. Fougner was born in Oslo, Norway in 1911 to the late Supreme Court Justice Sigurd Fougner and Karen Collett Fougner. He was educated in Oslo and earned a degree in chemical engineering at the Technische Hochschule Karlsruhe, in Germany, now the Karlsruhe University. Mr. Fougner was a member of Norway's resistance movement during World War II, responsible for tracking German communications in and out of Oslo. He brought his family to the United States in 1949 when he became president of the Norsk Hydro Sales Corporation, a division of Norsk Hydro. In 1962, he left Norsk Hydro to establish his own consultancy, Magnalith Corp. and through his work, he became a world-recognized expert in magnesium and light metals technology. The Fougner family lived in Garden City for almost 30 years. They were members of the Garden City Casino, where they enjoyed many hours of tennis and bridge. A man of intense curiosity about the world around him, Mr. Fougner was a source of joy to all who knew him, his family said. He loved to share his experiences and discoveries with his children and grandchildren. He was a naturalist and a dedicated bridge player; he had a passion for classical music, gardening, fly-fishing and woodworking; and he loved watching golf and tennis. He was an avid reader. "Papa Sven" was never bored; he always had places to go and things to do. Mr. Fougner was predeceased by his first wife, Lucie Getz Fougner. Besides his daughter in Darien and her husband, Peter Karpen, Mr. Fougner is survived by his former wife Harriet Welhaven; two other daughters: Kari Inglis, and her husband Bill, of Columbus, and Cici Hunt of Needham, Mass.; three sons: Jan Fougner, and his wife Ragnhild, of Oakland, Calif., Svein Fougner, and his wife Jean, of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., and Peter Fougner, and his wife Louise, of Rancho Bernardo, Calif; and 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Two memorial services are being planned. One service will be held in late November at the Forum, a senior residence in Ohio and the other service will be held in Darien in January 2008.
