After trouncing Carey, 33-14, in the Conference II football semifinal at Hofstra's Shuart Stadium last Friday in what was unquestionably their best performance of the year; the Garden City Trojans will play a re-match with top-seeded Lawrence for the Conference Championship. Kickoff is scheduled for this Friday night at Hofstra at 7 p.m.
It will be Garden City's 23rd trip to the final in the last 27 years and GC will be after its 17th title, including one that came by way of a forfeit in 1981. No other school has made as many appearances or won as many championships.
It seems appropriate to bring up past history because Coach Tom Flatley and Offensive Coordinator Tom Casey reached back to an old playbook against Carey, switching late in the first quarter from the spread offense to the "Power I" formation. The result was the most effective running game of the season. The change came soon after Carey opened the game with an 83 yard scoring drive which seemed far too easy.

After the GC defense adjusted, Brendan Carroll executed a beautiful run fake and launched a perfect 34 yard pass to a wide-open Pierce Bradley who scored the tying touchdown untouched.
From then on, the ground game took over. Joe Alleva took a pitch and sprinted around left end for a 28-yard TD early in the second quarter to give the Trojans a lead they would never lose. Seven minutes later Carroll connected with Francis McDonough on a 52-yard pass play to the Carey one. Michael Wood then blasted into the endzone for a 21-7 lead.
It was then time for Will Manning to step up. The senior halfback scored two second half touchdowns on runs of 12 and 34 yards. The Seahawks had no answer for his outside speed and he wound up with 110 yards on 17 carries. As a team, Garden City (8-1) rushed for 216 yards and Carroll added 107 on 4 for 8 passing.

The defense was challenged by Carey's fine quarterback Sal Intagliata who rushed for 75 yards and threw two touchdown passes, but the Seahawks' (5-4) two scores came early and too late.
Lawrence (9-0) crushed Elmont, 42-0, in the other semifinal. The Golden Tornadoes have size and a potent offense which features the outstanding running tandem of Justin Fredericks and Travis Kennedy and four-year starting quarterback P.J. Preziosa. The defending Long Island Class II champs handed GC its only loss of the season, 27-7 on October 13.
EXTRA POINTS: Francis McDonough is emerging as one of the finest receiver/safeties in GC history. He had his sixth interception of the season against Carey and now has 21 catches for 389 yards and four touchdowns. Many think that the best receiver ever for the Trojans was Francis's cousin Don '92.....Declan Fee was effective as a blocking back - a new role for the linebacker/guard...The kicking game remains strong with punter Matt Nesi averaging 36.5 yards on Friday, Connor Dwyer adding three more PAT's and Patrick Reeves booming kickoffs
