Garden City Library News
Nicole Matteini is a student at Garden City High School and works as a Page at the Library. Operation Wounded Warrior is a program sponsored by local fire departments to provide men and women in the armed forces, who have been wounded during the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, with personal items not normally supplied by the military. Jewelry Making & Design for Adults Thursdays, Nov 29th & Dec 13th 7:00PM Registration Begins Sunday November 18th The Garden City Public Library will offer a two part program on Jewelry Making and Design for adults. Ofra Levin will instruct participants on how to make their own earrings and bracelets with semi-precious stones. Ofra Levin, the founder of Ofra Jewels, studied jewelry design at The Fashion Institute of Technology and worked in the Diamond District in NYC. These classes are being held on two Thursdays, November 29th and December 13th at 7:00 PM at the Garden City Public library and are for adult Garden City residents only. Participants must be able to attend both classes. Registration begins Sunday, November 18th and must be done in person. If further information is needed, please contact Laura Flanagan at the Garden City Public Library at 742-8405. Adult Winter Reading Club It's that time again! We invite you to join the Garden City Public Library for its second annual Adult Winter Reading Club to be held from Sunday, December 2nd to Saturday, March 29th. Receive a gift just for signing up! There are no meetings. You choose the books you want to read or listen to. You will fill out a review card for each book. You will then be entered into a final drawing to be held on Friday, April 11th at the "Cozy Up with a Good Book" Brunch (by invitation only). The more review cards you fill out, the more chances you have to win! Registration begins Sunday, December 2nd and must be done in person. You must be an adult Garden City resident to join. So come in and register and receive your gift at the Reference Desk. And remember, cozy up with a good book! Library Discard Books Available The Garden City Public Library Fall discard book sale will not be held this November. The storage area where the discards were stored is being converted into a new computer room and media center in the library which will open later this year. Books that have been donated to the Friends of the Library will be available to holiday shoppers at The Friends of the Library's "Christmas Book-tique" to be held on Saturday, December 8th from 9 am to 4pm. In addition, donated books will also be available on an ongoing basis at the library in a new enlarged space designated for use by the Friends as well as at the group's annual Spring book sale. The Library has partnered with Better World Books to sell discard books. Better World Books is an online bookseller, which returns a percentage of the sales to the library and also contributes a percentage of sales to non-profit literacy partners. Garden City's discards can be viewed online at www.betterworldbooks.com. For additional information, interested purchasers should contact the reference desk at the library. News From The Children's Room Starting The Holiday Season With a Craft and Movie Registration begins on Saturday, November 24 at 9:00 AM, for "Time for Kids Snowman Craft" with Donna Green. This program is for Garden City residents, ages 2 1/2 through 5 (not in kindergarten). Please sign up for one time slot, either 9:30 AM or 10:45 AM. The program will be held on Saturday, December 1. Start the holiday season early by joining us on November 24 at 3:00 PM for a family movie "Angelina Ballerina: The Show Must Go On". The program is for residents ages 2 1/2 through Grade 5 and their families. No tickets or registration required. It's a movie the whole family can enjoy! Program For Special Needs Children There are openings in our special needs story time! Please contact the children's room for additional information if interested. Additional dates are November 30, December 7 and December 14. We have had several sessions so far and the results have been positive, and we all had a great time! Live Homework Help The library now subscribes to an after school Live Homework Help center, called "tutor.com", where children in grades 4th - 12th grades can connect to a "live" tutor in the online classroom for expert help in Math, Science, Social Studies and English! This service is available every day from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. If you are visiting the library, simply click the link on the Library website, enter the grade level and the subject area and you are connected to an expert! If you are working at home, access library website at www.gardencitypl.org, enter your library card number when prompted and follow the easy directions. Book Discussions Book club discussions are still ongoing for the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders! Schedule and book information follows: New Friends in a Book Club for children presently enrolled in Third Grade. Program is 45 minutes on Wednesdays at 5:00 PM. The next date is November 28 - "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" by Barbara Robinson. Go Forth! Fourth Grade Book Club - For children presently enrolled in the Fourth Grade. Program is 45 minutes on Wednesdays at 5:00 - 5:45 PM. The next date is November 28 - "The Whipping Boy" an award-winning book by Sid Fleischman. The Page Turners - for children presently enrolled in the Fifth Grade. A 45-minute program on Mondays at 5:45 PM. The next date is November 26 - "Kensuke's Kingdom" by Michael Morpurgo. Bring dinner and dessert and beverage will be served! Please check the library website www.gardencitypl.org for upcoming events and registration dates. Funding for these programs has been provided by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Priority for registration and participation is given to children who are Garden City Public Library cardholders.
