Troop 243 Visits Clear Lake

Breakfast at camp
Winter camping came early this year for Boy Scout Troop 243 and its affiliated Cub Pack during a its weekend camping trip to Durland Scout Reservation (better known as "Clear Lake"). During the stay, the eleven boy scouts and six We-belos were surprised by-but prepared for-the sub-freezing nighttime temperatures. The trip provided a great opportunity for the younger scouts to learn cold weather camping skills and enjoy the warmth of the evening campfire, complete with hot chocolate and the perennial favorite, s'mores. The weekend proved to be a unexpected "warm up" for the annual "Blue Nose" winter camping tripan event that has seen older boys sleep in home made igloos or tents surrounded by feet of snow.

As with many troop outings, the boys prepared their own meals according to the "patrol method". The older boys prepared hamburgers for one meal, while the younger scouts enjoyed pasta with sauce. Not to be outdone, the adults feasted on sausage and peppers as well as beef stew.

Approximately 1400 acres, the camp is owned by the Westchester-Putnam County Boy Scout Council. The weekend at this great camp enabled the younger boys to learn scouting basics, while providing them with a natural playground for exploring and rock climbing. The ten adults (including three moms) also en-joyed the morning hike under crystal clear skies at the beautiful facility in Putnam County.

Enjoying the campfire
Troop 243 is celebrating its 65th year of service to the Garden City community. Sponsored by St. Joseph's R.C., the troop is inviting all alumni to contribute memorabilia and photographs to be displayed at our annual Pancake Breakfast that will be held this January 6, 2008. Any former scout who would like to contribute is asked to contact Jim Morrell at jgmorrell@optonline.net or 516-248-2138 for further information.
