Flash Top Great Neck

Isabel Klatt pushes forward.
On November 3, the GU10 Garden City Flash beat the Great Neck Lightning at iPark. The conditions were, once again, challenging. The wind blew cold and raw and, although it didn't rain, the field was saturated. The Flash did not appear troubled, however, as they charged into the lead. Michaela Bruno took a throw in from Julia McGuire on the left side of the field and played a square ball to Emily O'Neill in the center. Emily pushed the ball back to the left and placed a left footed shot just under the cross bar to put the team in front. The Flash doubled the lead when Isabel Klatt moved the ball from the right side to Katherine Galzerano in the center. Katherine quickly laid the ball off to Nicole Leto on the left side of the box, who calmly placed the ball inside the far post to make it 2-0. A few minutes later, Katherine took a square ball from Isabel and re-leased Julia McGuire into the box on the left hand side. Julia made no mistake, putting the ball past the keeper high on the far side. The scoring closed when Katie Muldoon, playing in the center, fed Chloe Stapleford on the left wing. Chloe took a touch and drilled the ball inside the near post for the final tally of the half.

Grace Cameron eludes a Great Neck defender.
The second half brought further pressure from the Flash. Katherine Galzerano jumped on a weak clearance and, from the left side, put the ball in the top corner on the near side to push the lead to five. Thereafter, the team began to work their passing game, stringing together multiple passes and moving the ball smoothly around the field. A four or five pass sequence freed Michaela Bruno in the Great Neck area. She beat a defender and put the ball in over the keeper at the near post. Thereafter, the Flash moved the ball all the way down the left wing, back to their end of the field and across to Grace Cameron on the right. Grace blew past her defender, scampered down the wing and blasted the ball by the keeper high on the near side. With a big lead, the Flash got a little careless with the ball in their end, allowing Great Neck a breakaway that produced its only goal of the game. Emily O'Neill then book-ended her opener, dribbling through a few defenders on the left hand side before finishing with her left foot at the near post to provide the final margin.

The Flash sweep forward on the attack.
Led by Nicole Derby and Isabel Klatt, the Flash's defense was once again solid. Great Neck managed only a single shot on goal the entire game. Keepers Nicole Derby and Nicole Leto were focused largely on handling back passes and clearances and grateful to stay out of the mud.

The team will be back in action next Saturday against East Meadow at St. Paul's. The sun has been invited to attend. Go Flash!
