Sparks Blow Up The Dynamite

Kayla turns the corner
On Saturday, November 3, the Sparks (GU-12) took on the Rockville Centre Dynamite in gale force winds at St. Paul's. Although the Dynamite had the wind in the first half, the Sparks controlled the play, led by defenders Caroline Beaty, Emma Gallagher and Haley O'Hanlon and midfielders Annie Blanco and Sabrina Rodgers, who kept the Dynamite from mounting any serious attacks. Keeper Kaitlyn Gorman easily handled the few balls that came her way. Erin Connelly, Kate DeMarco and Lauren Mixon put pressure on the Rockville Centre defense, creating several scoring chances and helping keep the play in the Rockville Centre end. Going with the wind in the second half, the Sparks stepped up the pressure, with Tara DeAngelo putting a scare into the Dynamite keeper with a shot that sailed just over the crossbar. After a scramble in front of the Rockville Centre net, with Sparks swarming around, Sarah Galzerano pushed a shot past the RVC keeper to give the Sparks a 1-0 lead. Later in the half, displaying dogged perseverance, Taylor Carpentier banged in the Sparks' second goal of the game. Brianna Maglio, Kayla Murphy, Katherine Malhame and Shannon Callahan kept up the offensive and defensive pressure, refusing to let the Dy-namite get back into the game and preserving the 2-0 victory for the Sparks.
