In Memoriam Eileen M. Adams
Long time Garden City resident Eileen M. Adams, wife of Thomas J. Adams and mother of son Tom and daughter Wendy Adams Miklus and seven grandchildren, died on October 7 th at North Shore Hospital. She was 67 years old and died quietly within ten weeks of the first symptoms of kidney cancer. Raised in Queens, N.Y., Eileen graduated from Marymount College in Manhattan where she majored in mathematics. She later obtained a Master of Science degree from Adelphi. In 1974 Eileen moved to Garden City with her husband and young children. She became involved in numerous community activities, including Girl Scouts and St. Joseph's CCD. She was a member of the Garden City Country Club and The Garden City Casino. In 1981 she resumed her full time career teaching math at Garden City High School. Over the years, she was always pleased to meet and chat with her many former students. She loved her career and her colleagues in the Math Department. However, she retired after 13 years to enjoy her growing number of grandchildren: Katie, Matt, Tim, Annie and Caroline Miklus and Victoria and Carly Adams. Eileen loved to read and entertain and a good political discussion. She had an easy smile, a quiet wit and a multitude of friends both in Garden City and in Shoreham, L.I., her summer community. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Joseph's R.C. Church on October 11 th. Her nephew and godchild, William McGurn, concluded his eulogy saying: "The tears we shed today are for our loss, not Eileen's. So we say goodbye, and remember that this good woman died as she lived -- with courage ... with grace ... and with a firm belief in the eternal love that binds us to her still."
