Adelphi Panels Address Issues Two "Women, Peace and Justice" events held at Adelphi University will convene prominent women leaders and scholars to address issues of gender and leadership. "Women, Peace and Justice" is a collaborative and interdisciplinary project intended to engage and inform members of Adelphi University and the broader community about issues related to race, class, gender, ability, age, sexuality, diversity, and peace and justice. The events are free and open to the public.
"Women, Peace and Justice: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom November 13, 2007 A celebration through song, at 5:00 p.m. Panel, at 6:00 p.m. Panelists include Margo Okazawa-Rey, US and Canada Coordinator of the 1000 Peace Women project; Cora Weiss, one of the U.S. 1000 Peace Women and president of the Hague Appeal for Peace; Walda Katz Fishman, professor of sociology at Howard University and member of the U.S. Social Forum National Organizing Committee; Rha Goddess, artist and founder and CEO of Divine Dime Entertainment Ltd. and founder/project director of the Next Wave of Women & Power/"We Got Issues!" project; Hector Calderon, principal of El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice; and Marsha J. Tyson Darling, professor of history and interdisciplinary studies and director of the African American and Ethnic Studies Program at Adelphi University. The panelists will discuss how the work they have done relates to the theme of "Women, Peace and Justice," as well as reflect about the particular role that women historically play in struggles toward peace and justice both locally and globally and share thoughts about the future. Women and Leadership Navigating the Labyrinth: What Men and Women Need to Know Sponsored by the Lindemann Lecture In partnership with the Adelphi University Office of Alumni Relations and the Long Island Fund for Women and Girls Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom November 30, 2007, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Book signing to follow, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Women and Leadership lecture, featuring prominent women leaders, accomplished scholars, and acclaimed authors on leadership who have broken the gender barrier and addressed cutting edge issues of gender and leadership, will explore the challenges faced by women leaders, the differences in how they lead, and the gender role expectations and diversity that influence their leadership styles. Panelists include Jean Lau Chin, dean of the Adelphi Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies; Roya Ayman, professor and director of the Industrial and Organizational Psychology Program at the Illinois Institute of Psychology; Bonita L. Betters-Reed, associate professor at Simmons College School of Management; Toy Caldwell-Colbert, provost and professor at Central State University; Alice Eagly, professor at Northwestern University; Diane F. Halpern, professor and director of the Berger Institute for Work, Farmily, and Children at Claremont McKenna College; and Sandra Shullman, Ph.D., partner of Executive Development Group, LLC.
