Girls Varsity Soccer Advances To Semifinals

It took 18 minutes for Garden City's Alli Kleshefsky to score for the girls varsity soccer team in the first round of playoffs against North Shore on October 26. Kleshefsky scored on a pass from Catherine Furman giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead. In the 62nd minute Becky Lynch scored on an assist from Jenna Zarou and 13 minutes later, on a cross from Brittany Wilton, Paige Logan added another goal giving the Trojans a 3-1 victory over North Shore, leading the way to a quarterfinal match against Jericho held at GCHS on Tuesday October 30th.

By the end of regulation against Jericho, with the scored tied at 0-0, the game was headed for overtime. The first overtime ended with no goals which led to a second overtime period. With seven minutes left, GC's Emily Menges scored the game winner on another assist from Brittany Wilton. Goalkeeper Aly Zafonte recorded her seventh shutout, making four saves against Jericho, leading to the 1-0 victory. The no. 3 seeded Trojans will play no. 2 Island Trees in the semifinals held on Saturday, November 3rd at 6 pm at Michael Tully Park, off Denton Avenue. You can see more photos at www.Newsphoto.com
