Destroyers Hold Their Own Against Fusion

When the Destroyers u11 boys soccer team last played the Oyster Bay Fusion, our fair Garden City lads had been torn apart and left to plead for mercy. However, this year, steeped in the confidence of last week's victory against the Dominators, the Destroyers were ready for anything.
The first half of the game, in typical Destroyer fashion, was scoreless. The entire team managed to keep the pressure on and Nick de Moura was very strong in goal, making several saves that kept the Destroyers in the game.
The halfbacks did a great job of controlling the middle of the field, notably Chris "Ironman" Gormley using his speed and physical play. Jack "Jack-Attack" Brennan seemed to always be around the ball. Mike "Slick" Brennan showed that he has developed some moves that have his teammates amazed. The Destroyer "Matts"- Mullahey and Jones did double duty on offense and defense as well and created several scoring opportunities.
The Fusion put pressure on the defense on several occasions but Destroyer D-boyz; Brandon Punturo, Brandon Choi and Darius Iraj were able to stop several attempts to get to the goalie.

The corner kicks from John Evangelista were awesome. Marc Oellrich and Nick Sarkis continued to fight hard and showed good hustle at forward.
In the second half, the Fusion managed to confuse things on the Destroyers' defensive end and scored to make the game 1-0. The Destroyers seemed to lose their gusto, but quickly regrouped. Finally, with Conor Sproat and John Malandro playing particularly strong, the game culminated in Malandro making a strong pass to Andrew Mohacsi who got the Destroyers revenge by blasting a right foot shot up into the back of the net for the tie with less than 2 minutes left.
The Destroyers managed to hang on, and although this game ended in a tie, Coaches Mullahey, Sproat and Sarkis, with Destroyers' trainer Nick looking on, truly felt that the game had played out as a Destroyers win.
