Garden City Shock Remain Undefeated

The Garden City Shock, GU10, remains undefeated in the Nassau Central Division of the Long Island Junior Soccer League after six weeks of play. The girls, led by coaches Bill Metzler, Adriano Cammarata and Brian Kubler, have been dominating their opponents each week. The latest to be shocked was perennial soccer powerhouse Rockville Centre who traveled to St. Pauls last weekend hoping the game would be called due to the heavy rains. But "play on!" said the ref and off the girls went.

Right from the start, the girls moved in on their opponents stealing the kick off and heading down field. It didn't take long before they scored their first goal of the game which came after a nice passing combination between Jenna Cammarata and Hailey Harder up the right side of the field; at just the right moment Hailey sent the ball into the middle where Kerri Metzler was waiting. Kerri put a rocket shot into the lower right hand corner for the first goal of the game.

RVC attempted to rebound, but the wall of defense comprised of Caroline Peppard, Juliana Kubler, Jane Stone and Olivia DeCurtis put an end to that stealing the ball time and time again and moving it up the sides to alternating forwards, Julia Forbes, Brooke McDaid, Tiana Biscone, Hailey Harder, Kerri Metzler and Jenna Cammarata who were relentless on the RVC defense.

The second of the Shock's six goal barrage came when Olivia DeCurtis pushed up offensively and took a pass from Juliana Kubler and shot a ball from outside the 18 putting it past the goalie on the slippery field.

Brooke McDaid, Tiana Biscone, Kerri Metzler, Hailey Harder and Julia Forbes used their speed to out run their de-fenders time and again setting up many of the Shock's opportunities.

Desperate to keep the Shock at bay, RVC cleared the ball out of bounds, only to find that Jane Stone, Olivia DeCurtis, Hailey Harder and Juliana Kubler could make the long throw into their waiting teammates for yet another offensive on-slaught.

So good were the Shock in the first half that Emma Costello playing in goal saw but one or two balls in her area which she easily cleared for the Shock returning them to the RVC end of the field.

The Shock's third goal came after the girls were pressuring and the RVC defense put the ball out of bounds. Caroline Peppard, in perfect position, grabbed the goal kick, moved it around two RVC defenders and fired it into the upper right corner for GC's third goal of the game.

The faithful fans who braved the winds and rain would see two more goals by GC before the end of the first half with speedy and persistent Tiana Biscone and Hailey Harder each adding to the tally by scoring with support from Julia Forbes, Brooke McDaid and Jenna Cammarata.

With a comfortable lead going into the second half, the girls were told not to worry about scoring but to work on their passing combinations up the sides of the field and then into the middle. With the offensive pressure bearing down on them from Emma Costello (fresh from the goal) RVC was forced to clear the ball, often giving the Shock a corner kick. Juliana Kubler, Olivia DeCurtis, Caroline Peppard and Jenna Cammarata sent balls flying to their forwards waiting in front of the net on some impressive corner kicks. Juliana Kubler working the right wing late in the second half shot from the outside and hit the far post and scored the Shock's sixth and final goal of the game.

Coach Metzler commented "the girls played fantastic soccer and did a great job!" Coach Kubler was happy with the balanced attack with six different players scoring.

Keep up the great work girls!!! Go Shock!!! Go GC!!!!
