In Memoriam
Lorraine M. Hart, 79, of Garden City, passed away on Friday, October 26, 2007 after a short illness. Born January 11, 1928, in Queens, New York, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary LeHanka. Raised in Astoria, Queens, she graduated from Grace Institute and she worked as a bookkeeper before her marriage to Howard Hart. She met her husband when he worked as a lifeguard at Rockaway Beach and their family life together often revolved around vacations at the beach. They raised their family of seven children in Woodbury, New York until her husband's untimely death at age 49. She then moved to Garden City, where her children attended the Garden City Public Schools and she was active in the Mercy League and the American Cancer Society, where she served as President. In 2005, she received a Lifetime Service Award from the American Cancer Society acknowledging her almost 30 years of service. She was a member of the Atlantic Beach Club for almost thirty years. She is survived by her six children - Susan Dahill of New Canaan, Connecticut, Janine Nebons of Westhampton Beach, NY, Christopher Hart of Rockville Center, NY, Gene Hart of Brooklyn, NY, Patricia Nessler of Garden City, NY and Cathleen Hart of Garden City, NY. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren - Katherine Hart Dahill of New York City, NY, Elizabeth Hart Dahill of Los Angeles, CA, Caroline Nebons Hoak of Los Angeles, CA, Christopher Nebons of New York City, NY, Courtney Nebons of Bristol, CT., Lindsey, Allison and Michelle Hart of Rockville Center, NY, William and Anne Hart of Brooklyn, NY and Ashley and Richard Nessler of Garden City, NY. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Carol Elizabeth Hart. A memorial mass was held at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday, October 30th.
