Busy Season At The Historical Society Museum
The Garden City Historical Society invites residents and friends to attend its November events at the Historical Society Museum, 109 Eleventh Street. For the next two weekends, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (November 2-4 and 9-11), the Museum will be open for our second annual professional art show, Garden City in Art: a Mixed Media Exhibit. The show features 11 local artists, exhibiting works in photography, printmaking, clay and marble sculpture, pastels, watercolor and oils. The Exhibit hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
On Thursday, November 15, at 7:30 p.m., the Society will host a free lecture and slide presentation, "Sculptors of the Gilded Age," given by Professor Don Dwyer. Professor Dwyer's lecture features some of the prominent sculptors working at the height of the A.T. Stewart era. The end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries saw the emergence and maturity of American sculpture in individual works and as adjuncts to monumental public architecture. Among others, this lecture will be essentially concerned with Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Daniel Chester French, creator of Lincoln's sculpture in the noted monument in Washington, D.C. All are welcome; light refreshments served.
During the art exhibit, guests are also invited to browse through the Society's A.T. Stewart Exchange. The consignment shop has a wide variety of items, including furniture, dishes, beleek china, glassware, lamps, vases, paintings, wall decorations, area rugs, jewelry and much, much more. The shop's regular hours are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m. (note new Saturday hours). Consignment items are accepted at the shop or by appointment...please call Kris Harder (747-1774) or Jill Mayer (747-8759). New items are always coming in, so do come back and visit us often. The entrance to the A.T. Stewart Exchange is located in the rear of the Historical Society Museum at 109 Eleventh Street.
