German-American Flag Raising Ceremony

Eighth-grade German language students from Garden City Middle School, accompanied by their teacher Frau Dr. Judith Hecker, took part in a Flag Raising Ceremony in front of the Nassau County Executive Building in Mineola on Friday, October 5. Sponsored by the German-American Cultural Council, the ceremony is held each year to celebrate German-American week.
NYS Supreme Court Judge Ute Wolff Lally presided over the event. Guest speakers included Hans-Jürgen Heimsoeth, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany; Heinz Buck, President of the German-American Cultural Council; and Tim Driscoll, Chief of Staff for the Nassau County Executive. Eighth-grade German Club officers Richard DeMarco, William Clarke, Helen Minett, and Sarah Odell also spoke. Judge Lally accepted a proclamation commemorating the contributions of German Americans and declaring October 5 the official German-American Day in Nassau County.
